You Say Potato

I say explosion.

When I posted my twice-baked potato recipe a few weeks ago, I made sure to include the following tip:

I’ve learned a couple of tricks while making this dish.  First, bake one more potato than you are going to serve.  That way, if one of the potato skins breaks during preparation you have a backup.  Also, I like my filling to mound over the potato skins.  It’s helpful to have the pulp of that extra potato.

Want to know how I came upon that sage advice?

I forgot to poke holes in my potatoes before baking them. (Looks like I “forgot” to clean my oven, too.  A few times, maybe.)  I remembered as I heard a terrifying POP coming from my kitchen. Too late.

While my twice-baked potato advice is surely wise and timeless, the following tip may prevent future oven explosions: yes, you really should poke holes in the potato before baking.

LOL! You sure got yourself a mess there! :D

It reminds me of the time about 6 months ago when my #2 son decided to warm up a hard boiled egg in the microwave and he let it go for too long and we heard the “explosion” of the egg!

    Thanks for the tip! :)

Enjoy the rest of your week! :)

  2. I’m sorry, but that is hilarious. Makes me think of Farmer Boy.

Lol I will be sure to remember this in the future when I make these!!

That sight looks very familiar to me! LOL I have had that happen even when I did poke holes in the potatoes! What a mess! But it’s a surefire way to make sure my oven gets cleaned. :)

That is too funny, of course it probably wasn’t too funny at the time. My grandma told my aunt to go boil an egg, and my aunt just put an egg in a pot and put it on the stove. No water. The egg exploded all over the place… at least yours was in a contained environment!

  6. Sherry says:

Yikes! I knew that could happen in the microwave, but I didn’t know the oven would do that, too.

You know what I love most about this story, Amy? That you bothered to take a picture to share with us! Makes it priceless! Definitely a timeless tip. :)

  8. I would be very tempted to leave that mess and make my husband clean it up for me. Thanks for the tip though, I don’t know if I’ve ever poked holes while oven cooking, but I think I will from now on, just to be safe.

Makes you wish you would have put tin foil under there. LOL!

That looks like something that would happen to me. I always cook our baked potatoes in the microwave, but it’s a good thing I read this post. In case I ever bake them in the oven, I’ll now know about the hole poking. Thanks for the tip.

Too funny! I’m wondering if the “pop” was really loud?

I usually wrap mine in foil. I don’t think I’ve ever put them in the oven ‘naked’. My mom used to do it this way, so I’ve just followed suit. Sometimes I’ve made twice baked potatoes in a muffin tin. The kids love them because they are mini sized (cut in half) and they just look fun.

I love that you posted this picture. Just when I thought you were absolutely perfect I find out just a little different. Thank you for being real with us and warning us that potatoes can explode in the oven.
