You know you’re from a tiny town when… {Finer Things Friday}

We’ve had quite a week.

On Saturday, after a full, busy, fun day, our 8yo had a belly ache.  She ended up sick Saturday night, but fine on Sunday, so we thought it was the bug that’s been going around.  Early Monday morning, though, she woke up with pain and was sick all.day.long., then developed a fever in the evening.

She woke up with severe pain at 5:00 Tuesday morning, and daddy took her to the ER.  The rest is appendectomy history, I suppose.

I know you get a kick out of my Tiny Town stories, so here’s a glimpse of what I skyped to some blogging friends while our girl was in surgery:

So far at the hospital… one of my husband’s former schoolmates (whose mom happens to be my mom’s BFF from grade/high school)  drew her blood, a Tiny Town friend is the surgical nurse, and one of our football moms (who works in surgery) is on a mission to find me some ketchup for my fries.  ;)   #friendsinhighplaces

I don’t make this stuff up, people, and it doesn’t stop there!

When we walked in the recovery doors, we were greeted by another football mom, who happens to be the recovery nurse.  Also, the hospital supervisor is a football grandma, and she checked on us in the first few hours that we were there.

I kid you not, it was as if she was having surgery “at home” and being cared for by family.  And that, my friends, when your baby is hurting and you’re worried out of your mind, is a very comforting, very fine thing!

What Finer Things are you celebrating this week?  Link up and let us know!  (I’m hoping to be celebrating hospital discharge in a day or two!)

  1. Oh, that is a finer thing! So glad your girl (and you) was well cared for!

  2. What a sweet story. We live in a smaller city. We don’t get quite the “touch” that you received, but it is nice to run into folks whom you know and have a little extra feel of family and friends in a place where you wouldn’t necessarily expect it.

Hope she is doing better and that you got some rest.

We grew up in a town like that, but when I had all three babies in tiny hospitals I wasn’t nearly as excited to have people I knew in the delivery room! The nurse was a friend of my mother-in-law, the lactation specialist lived just down the street, and so on. LOL!

Glad your baby girl is getting great care!

  4. Kim says:

    Priceless!!!

  5. Big fluffy squishy Teddy bears make everything better…:)

  6. Carmen says:

Love it!! :) Small town perks are the best!

Oh my goodness you sound like us! A single ER visit with my husband this summer caught me up on everything going on in our little town. Dr. is married to a friend from high school, nurse went to school with my husband next district over, my Aunt is an administrator who checked on us often, and the people one curtain over used to be neighbors. Hope your little one is doing better, but with all that attention I’m sure she is :)

  8. Both my Husband and I are from tiny towns. That kind of thing happens to us when we go back to our respective home towns and visit our folks too. My favorite is my mom getting mad when I don’t know where or what she’s talking about because the thing changed since I moved away over 10 years ago.

I hope your daughter has a speedy recovery!

  9. Casey says:

what a blessing to be surrounded by so many you know & can comfort, and help you all thru this! Glad your daughter is better and hope you all are at home re-couping soon. God bless!

  10. Run DMT says:

A Tiny Town is definitely a comforted blessing when your feeling down. Hope she feels better soon.

  11. Jackie Brown says:

Okay, so I’m taking my 8-year old to the dr. He’s had a stomach ache for 3 days.

  12. Ang says:

How comforting during a hard time. Small towns are great! Glad your daughter is well!

  13. Miranda says:

    Hope all is well soon!

Our town is so tiny that we don’t even have a hospital! I travel 25 minutes to the nearest hospital and I had my daughter in a hospital an hour away from our home. I do see some of my high school classmates as nurses sometimes, though :) !

Oh, gosh. I should have clarified. No hospital in Tiny Town. Not even a grocery store. ;) This is the “real town” about 20 minutes away.

  14. So glad your daughter is well :)

That’s what I love about living in a small town! When I went into to deliver Squiggle, my midwife was the same midwife who delivered my partner 31yrs ago And Lucky’s mum helped deliver our midwive’s children so there’s a close link between the two families. The hospital gardner is the husband of my midwife so he spent all of his breaks in my room cooing at Squiggle, as well as a few of the nurses who I know from Speedway (their partners all race).

  15. Shelli says:

Glad to hear that your daughter is ok! I’m praying for you all!

  16. Debbie Jennings says:

Glad things went OK with the surgery and the 8 yo is doing so well. When I read the first part of your post, my first thought was her appendix. Give her a Texas hug from this old Texan! =)

As for tiny towns . . . how about if you nephew is the recovery room nurse? And his wife is a nurse on CICU? That is good when you mother or mother-in-law has heart surgery! They are both RNs. And his best friend is a doctor at the hospital that you have to go to. (The same one where he works.) And my Ex-son-in-law is a respiratory therapist. Not only do the towns get smaller, the whole world is getting smaller. =)

I love the Tiny Town story – as I also live in a small town, my husband grew up here, but I am a transplant. There are so many perks to small town life. I hope you got the ketchup for your fries!
