My Gratituesday post has me in a bit of a nostalgic mood this week. Maybe it also has something to do with the cold weather and Christmas coming up, but I can’t seem to get board games off my mind. Classic board games. Remember those? The ones that are played with more than two thumbs or a computer mouse? The ones without robot voices directing your every move? The ones you play with someone?
Believe me, I know it’s tempting to pacify kids with electronic devises. I also know that they aren’t all bad. There’s a lot of learning to be done in front of a computer screen. But sometimes nothing beats a friendly competition with real people sitting right there in front of you.
Here are thirteen of my favorite classic board games. Most I remember playing as a child. Some we have in our home and play with our kids. All are very much worth your family time.
- Candyland
- Chutes and Ladders
- Memory
- Hi Ho Cherry-O
- Trouble
- Hungry Hungry Hippo
- Connect Four
- Sorry
- Guess Who?
- The Game of LIFE
- Operation
- Yatzee
- Battleship
Monopoly, Clue… someone stop me! This is the Thursday Thirteen, after all! What were your favorite board games growing up? Do you still play them today?

Guess Who?
Sorry
Monopoly
Life
Those are definitely my favorite board games…Thanks for sharing!!
Happy TT!
I hate Battleship. And I’m so glad you didn’t have Monopoly on there. But I’d play any of the others with you any day. (Candyland rocks!)
LIFE was one of my favorites! Happy TT!
My favorites are Clue & Scrabble.
Fun list!
Blessings,
Michele
I still love Monopoly, only no one will play with me because I am a greedy, deed-grabbing, power hungry, annoying player – maybe I should work on that. I also love Trivial Pursuit and card games – Canasta is my favorite. I’d love to learn bridge (nostalgia) and I like Rook ok, although I’m not very good at it.
Games are our favorite. Every year we buy even more and we play them all. They are cheap fun and full of teaching moments.
I LOVE games – board games, card games – any of them! Unfortunately, my sweet hubs isn’t so interested. Hopefully the little one will take after me and want to start playing soon!
What about Trivial Pursuit?? Or Monopoly?? Great list. Happy TT:)
I used to play Connect Four for hours!
Clue, Monopoly, Sorry, and Scrabble are family favorites in our house. Often, Daddy plays a game or two with the older children while Mommy entertains the little ones (by entertain, I mean make sure that their quick little hands stay away from the game board).
I enjoy your blog and am adding you to my list of favorites. Thanks for sharing your world.

Gasp!I don’t know any of these!I do play a lot of Monopoly and Scrabble, though but that’s about it. Oh and I loved Snakes and Ladders before.
We have 8 of them and my son is getting two of them for Christmas. I guess we’re trendy…who knew?
I’ve never played it, but my husband would add “Axis and Allies”…he grew up playing it, and still loves it! I like Settlers of Catan…
I have a TT up too! http://www.isthismodest.com
My favorite game growing up was LIFE and it was always my goal to get twins, not to win…I’m odd that way. Hilariouse, really, that I ended up with twins in real life. Other favorites were Clue, Yatzee, and Boggle.
We always liked playing cards too (canasta was a favorite.)
I played oodles of board games growing up with my 9 siblings. We also had a grandmother who lived with us and taught us many card games – Rummy, Canasta, Smear, Crazy Eights, Concentration (good for little ones to learn their numbers:). One of my favorite board games not mentioned yet was Parcheesi.
I think we have all of these! Two of my new favorites are Sequence and Blokus. Hopefully they’ll be classics in a few decades.
What?! No Monopoly or Risk? What kind of list is this?
Yes, it’s great to get around the table and share time together and play together!
Hope you have a great T13!
Amy, we must be around the same age because I played these all as a kid too! Our favorites were Sorry and Battleship (of course the original version that doesn’t have sound!). I also remember a game called Mastermind that we played alot too.
Can’t forget Scrabble (although someone else mentioned it.) 1313 Dead End Drive is a load of laughs, and it is so much fun!
I love them all. Plus parcheesi, scrabble, stratego and perfection.
Clue was always my favorite. I liked Operation until too many pieces got lost to be able to play it anymore.
I love classics – Life, Clue, Monopoly.
