Sunday would have been my brother’s 30th birthday.
As we were headed to the hospital that afternoon to meet and love on our brand new niece, birthdays were the topic of a lively conversation. My boy turned 4 on Saturday, and the new precious babe now shares his birthday! While we were chatting, I said “Hey guys. It’s Uncle Brett’s birthday today.”
And she did it again.
My 6 year old has always had an unexplainable relationship with the uncle she never met. She knows him.
“It is? Oh, I wish he was here so we could celebrate.” {short pause} “But, wait! We can celebrate, because he’s in heaven!” {another short pause} “He’s our Uncle Angel!” {then, the giggly singing}

Ah. How beautifully painfully lovely. I’m still constantly amazed at just how much our children “pick up” on the emotion of certain things – I fully believe the Lord uses them to remind us of His blessings, usually in some new random way!

Uncle Angel. Love it. We have one, too, that we’ve been without for only 11 short months. He was taken from us 30 years and 23 days into his life and we are still in those stages of grief. His birthday is coming up as well–September 9th. My brother and I always shared in our birthdays as mine is the following week (and I managed to squeeze one of my daughters in there on the 11th). Thank you for the post that I found over 2 years after the fact, but it still made me smile. We are sad here, but he sure is smiling in Heaven
