Tips for Ordering Glasses Online {Giveaway}

“Mom, I don’t like you in your glasses” is an oft-repeated 3 year old phrase in these parts.  I don’t know what that child’s issue is with my glasses, but she doesn’t like them, and she knows it’s funny that she doesn’t like them!

She’ll yell at me through the door when I’m in the bathroom.  “Mom, are you in there?  Are you putting your “tontacts” in?  I like you in your tontacts, Mom.”  Yes, yes, I know you do.

I’ve worn glasses and/or contacts since the 4th grade.  Other than a brief stint in the surgery chair for a failed lasik treatment,  (Another story for another day, but let’s just say they were supposed to cut a flap in the cornea, not remove the whole stinkin’ thing, but they did, and then they stopped and said “your eyeball is too small.”  Yes!  That’s what they said!) I have to use one or the other for my incredible nearsightedness.

Recently, 39 Dollar Glasses contacted me to see if I’d review a pair of their glasses.  Since my daughter clearly doesn’t care for the scratched, falling apart pair that I have, I thought I’d give it a try.  Plus, ordering glasses online?  For $39?  I was intrigued.

All it took was me getting my prescription from my eye doctor, and then looking through lots (and lots!) of glasses, trying to figure out how they’d look on me.  That was the tough part, even with the helpful little SmartFit face shapes on each page.  Turns out, the pair I ordered is much too big, but I’m going to take them in to my optician’s and see if they can adjust the fit.

Ordering glasses can, however, equal great savings.  Here are my tips (also known as “What Amy should have done”) for ordering glasses online.

1.  Make sure your prescription is current and written clearly.

2.  Visit a local optometrist or other eye-wear shop and try on lots of glasses.  Find the style and color that look best on your face.

3.  Take a photo of your favorite pair of glasses so you don’t forget what they look like when you search online.

4.  Use the SmartFit feature to print a photo of the glasses you select.  Compare the size to the pair you already own.

Even though the pair I ordered doesn’t seem quite right for me, they are sturdy and arrived nicely packaged with a few extras.  I was thoroughly impressed.

  1. I am entering the contest for my husband. He could seriously use a new pair of frames, and this is a good way for me to convince him to buy them 🙂

  2. I’m entering for myself. My daughter has recently discovered the ‘fun’ in grabbing mama’s glasses off my face! And her brother used to do it too and send them flying. I figure at some point my poor beat up glasses are going to give up the ghost and it would be great to be ready with another pair.

  3. Deborah says:

Entering for myself … been wearing glasses for 17 years now!

  4. I’ve worn glasses since I was two. Ugh. I wore contacts for about 10 years, but then my eyes would no longer tolerate them, so, back to glasses.

  5. Jessica Martinez says:

I’m entering for myself. I’ve been wearing glasses for 20 years. The sad thing is I’m only 27, lol

  6. I’ve worn glasses since I was 15. My current pair broke a few weeks ago and is being held together with scotch tape. Hoping I can squeeze a new pair into the budget before the tape gives. I will definitely check out this site!

  7. I would love to win this for my 5 year old. He just got glasses for the first time this year and they are constantly braking.

  8. I am entering for myself. I have worn glasses or contacts since 3rd grade. I wear only glasses now. way too chicken to try lasik!

  9. Diana B says:

I’ve been wearing glasses since 4th grade, but we would probably use the credit on prescription sunglasses for my husband. I think he has worn glasses since the 4th grade as well.

  10. I’ve been wearing glasses since… um…. I don’t know! I think I might have gotten them when I was in high school.

I could certainly use a new pair. My current lenses are really scratched since I got lazy and started cleaning them on my shirt. Bad me.

  11. I’ve been wearing glasses since 1st grade and yes as a matter of fact, they were rose tinted in the 80’s. When I went into 6th grade, I started wearing contacts and haven’t owned a pair of glasses in 10 years! Due to terrible seasonal allergies, I really need to buy a pair soon.

    Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

  12. I’ve been wearing contacts and glasses for a little over 10 years now. However, just this year, my eyes decided they are no longer going to let me wear contacts. It’s only glasses now for me.

  13. Sunshine says:

I have worn glasses since the fourth grade also. My glasses now are about 8 years old and in desperate need if being updated. Thanks for the opportunity.

  14. I have worn glasses since high school but at age 40 I have had to have bifocals. I have been trying contacts and I do like them But I still wish I had a pair of glasses.

  15. My husband has been wearing my old (like 7 years old) glasses for the past two years. His glasses before that were even worse. I would be SO HAPPY to be able to use this to get him new glasses!

  16. Glasses…ugh! I’ve been wearing them for 30 years (since I was 7), switched to contacts at 14, but have kept my old glasses for when I take my contacts out-they broke after 20 years… My 8 year old has been wearng glasses for 4 years, breaks them all.the.time! We had just replaced his frames, when the rooster attacked him & knocked out one of the lenses-$250 to replace at eye doctors!!! I looked online to buy him a replacement pair and a “free” pair would cost $150 because of his prescription!

  17. I’ve worn glasses since I was 12 (contacts mostly though) and my son since 11 months. We both need new pairs this summer…OK so I was due in May about 4 years ago. It’s so hard to justify the expense when I mostly where contacts. $39 I can handle.

  18. Elisabeth says:

I’ve worn glasses ever since I can remember! At least 4 or 5 years old! (I even remember the one pair of glasses I had when I was small that had ice cream cones on the corner! So awesome!) I could really use a new pair of frames.

  19. Entering for myself…I happen to have an eye appointment next week. Been wearing glasses/contacts for 11 years and I definitely prefer glasses over contacts. Glad to hear about this site!

  20. I’ve been wearing them since the third grade! And I’m in desperate need of another pair … my son accidentally head-butted me – he stood up as I was standing over his shoulder – and snapped my beautiful invisible frame in two! Note, those frames not really great around kids!

  21. Michele says:

When I was 9, I got my first pair of glasses. I refused to wear them. My parents had no choice but to get me contacts at the age of 11. This was kinda unheard of in 1971. When I graduated college, being a science major meant I could go into any science field. I ended up as a chemist. Guess what??? Chemist can not wear contacts in the lab. So after wearing glasses all day at work, it was just easier for me to wear glasses at home and on the weekends. I love wearing glasses now, for the past 25 years.

  22. I would like to try the online ordering service. I’m a bit intimidated by the idea – but if I won it – I would try it.

  23. I have worn glasses for years and am currently wearing a pair with a small piece of scotch tape on the side.. holding them together. Ridiculous, I know! Maybe I will order a pair of these!

  24. I’ve worn glasses almost 30 years….I need a new pair so I’ll try the $39 pair. Thanks

  25. I am entering because I need to replace my lenses. I called a place at the mall yesterday and they want to charge $390 just to switch out my single vision lenses. That is outlandish! I am severerly nearsighted as well. Are the glasses 39 for frames and lenses? I wonder if that includes high index? Guess I need to get online and check.

  26. Renee B says:

I would love to win these for my husband. He works so hard for our family and has not bought new glasses in the 15 years we have been together. He has been wearing glasses since 5 th grade.

  27. I have been wearing glasses for 40 years and have been contemplating ordering online for the lower cost of their glasses. The reason is I have a hard time keeping glasses! Every time I purchase a new pair of glasses they are damaged or lost. I am the culprit for the them turning up missing but the damage parts are never my fault! The 2 pair I am currently wearing, the dog has chewed, very unsightly!!!!! And the office bird while sitting on my desk chewed the limbs into something very hard to keep on my face. It is a blessing I only have to wear to see anything at a distance 😉 I love Finer Things!

  28. Since I was 11… “Molly, tell me when you can see that sign”… we pass it … “I see it now!”…
I like my cheapo glasses. I have a couple pairs. Including my fun hipster ones. Teehee.

  29. Stephanie S says:

I’ve been wearing them since I was 10. I seldom wear my contacts so a new pair of frames would be great. Thanks for the chance to win.

  30. I would need these for myself. I have worn glasses since I was maybe 10. I was an avid reader and I think that might have had something to do with it. I went to contact lenses when I was about 17 and now that my eyes have gotten “older” I wear only one lens so I can read with one eye and see far away out the other. However, I’ve misplaced my glasses and would love to have a new pair! Thanks.

  31. For my sweet hubby since his glasses broke and his old pair has teeth marks from the dog (long story).

  32. Maribel Hannigan says:

I’m entering for myself. I started wearing glasses when I was 2 years old. I went into contacts when I was about a sophomore in High School, but only wore them for a few years because they were bothersome. I did lasik, but didn’t acheive 20/20 vision. So I have to use reading glasses now. I was so optimistic that lasik would work, but I guess I’ll never be rid of these dang specs.

  33. The glasses would be for me. Two of my piano students, both fourth grade boys, said my glasses made me look “scary”. I think that was because I was talking seriously to them about practicing or reminding them of a concept like sitting still and listening. They said it was my glasses and I was “not scary” when I took them off.

  34. Lets see, I’ve worn glasses since I was 5 years old. Currently, all I wear is contacts (as I don’t even own a pair of glasses), but my vision has gotten so bad, that I need something so that I can take my contacts out at night and still see. (My vision is currently 20 / 600 with major astigmatism in both eyes). It makes fitting contacts way fun!!

  35. I’ve been bespectacled for 16 years.

  36. I have been wearing glasses or contacts for 31 years.

  37. I’ve been wearing glasses for 18 years, and my one-year-old son has recently discovered the fun of pulling them off my face. My glasses are broken but my insurance won’t pay for new ones for another year!

  38. Danielle says:

I’ve only been wearing glasses for a little over a year…a wonderful gift from my last pregnancy. 🙁 I only have to wear them when I want more clarity. And I’ve learned that one pair just isn’t enough because the pair I have never seem to be where I am. 🙂

  39. I truely do not understand how you can order glasses online. I’ve worn them since my mid -twenties. It takes me forever trying on frames to find ones that fit right..look nice..aren’t too heavy. How do you figure out from an online photo if they are too heavy for you?

    • It’s definitely easier if you’re not too picky about your glasses. 😉 The heaviness… I don’t know how to solve that issue. You can, though, print out a “life-sized” print of the glasses to see how big they are.

  40. The glasses would be for my husband. He desperately needs new glasses and has been wearing glasses or contacts since he was a little kid.

  41. These would be for me, to replace my scratched lenses 🙂 My 11-month old daughter loves pulling my glasses off whenever I lay on the floor to play with her. I’ve been wearing glasses and contacts since 6th grade – so, 15ish years?

  42. I’m so sorry Lasik didn’t work for you. It was like a miracle for me. I’m hoping that someday my daughter can do it, because she inherited my bad vision. She could use some new glasses! She wears contacts, but it’s nice to have a pair of glasses for backup.

  43. I have worn glasses or contacts since the fifth grade (I’m 40yrs old). I can’t remember what it is like to wake up and be able to read the numbers on the clock on my bedside table. I prefer contacts but love my glasses late at night and first thing in the morning. Horror stories like yours about the lasik surgery is what keeps me from trying that.

  44. I’ve worn glasses since I was eleven. I think I would use this money for my husband. He is very, very rough on his glasses.

  45. I do not wear glasses but my husband does and he needs a new pair. Until I met him, I had no idea how expensive the exam and glasses could be. He wears contacts for the most part but needs the glasses on hand for the times he can’t. I love the chance to win but even if I don’t, what a great tip!

  46. I first got glasses in fifth grade. I was not a disobedient child, but for whatever reason I refused to wear my glasses! In seventh grade I got contacts and I wore them basically every day for 14 years. When my son Collin was born in January, the sleep deprivation led me to start wearing my glasses again. Collin now sleeps well, but I have come to enjoy glasses. I wouldn’t mind a new pair though… 🙂

  47. I’ve worn glasses since the 2nd grade.

I feel very bad in saying this, but I just got a new pair of glasses and paid a lot of money for them, and I just really don’t like them. So, I’d love to win a free pair to change it up.

  48. I’ve been wearing glasses for about 28 years. Well, I’ve also worn contacts in that time but now I need bi-focals. I can’t seem to get contacts to work anymore. I’d love to get a pair of glasses for less $’s!

  49. Angie Doel says:

I have worn glasses since I was 8 years old – and now with 3 very active children it seems like I’m replacing them at least once per year because they get broken, scratched, etc. I would LOVE to win a pair of glasses!

  50. I’ve been wearing glasses since 2nd grade, so—about 20 years now. I could definitely use a new pair!

  51. I have worn glasses for about 6 years – and am in desperate need of a new pair!

  52. I’ve worn glasses for about 6 years. I need a new pair and have been thinking about ordering online. I sure would love to win a pair. 🙂

  53. I’ve worn them since the 4rth grade. Right now, I am wearing my safety glasses from my job at a chemical plant 12 years ago. The prescription is old and they are heavy, so a new pair would be great!

  54. Deborah says:

I would love to try this. I have worn glasses since I
Was seven. My current glasses are so bent from my kids.

  55. I have been wearing “Coke bottle” glasses since I failed the vision test miserably in second grade. They quickly figured out why I was standing 2 inches from the chalkboard all the time!

I usually wear contacts during the day now, and save the glasses for morning and evening.

  56. I have worn glasses since just after I graduated and have upgraded to bi-focals 🙂 I could sure use an updated pair!

  57. Erica H says:

I’ve been wearing glasses for 23 years and would love to get a fun pair!

  58. I have worn glasses for (holy cow) 29 years. I was in first grade when I got them, which is young, but certainly not when compared to my girl who got them at 10 months. 🙂

  59. Tweet da lee dee!

  60. Shared on FB too.

  61. I don’t wear glasses but my husband needs a new pair!

  62. I’ve worn glasses for 28 years.

  63. I’m entering the contest for my 6-year-old daughter who has had glasses since she was two, had eye surgery when she was three and like most kids, is very rough on her glasses!

  64. I’ve worn glasses / contacts since 3rd grade – but I’d like to get this for my daughter. She is 23 and her glasses are 3 years old, scratched and one earpiece is barely hanging on. She recently lost her job due to the economy and really could use a new pair of glasses for the interviews I hope she is going to get!
By the way – I am soooo glad I found your site! Love it!

  65. I’ve worn glasses or contacts for 14 years now. I needed them even younger, like you, but I hid it from my mom. It got out of hand when I developed a perpetual squint. 😉

  66. I need to get my husband a new pair of glasses. Our puppy got a hold of his and chewed off the nose pads and scratched up his lenses!! So, this would be a great win for us!!

  67. Sarah Robinson says:

I have worn glasses since 3rd grade. I would love to win this credit-I have ordered glasses online before and LOVE IT!! I don’t know why everyone doesn’t try it.

  68. I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 10.

  69. Sadly, I have worn glasses since the first grade 🙁

  70. Rebecca L. says:

We just had our annual eye exams yesterday and I would love to win this for my 17 year old daughter. She mainly wears contacts but a back up pair of glasses are so important! She can’t see without some kind of correction.

  71. Rebecca L. says:

I shared this giveaway on Facebook.

  72. I’ve worn glasses since Grade 5. I’m 54 now. That’s like, 44 years! Yikes, that’s a long time! I seriously do need a new pair, need to upgrade to bifocals.

  73. Darlene Webster says:

I have worn eyeglasses since 6th grade. I would like to get the glasses for my husband who has worn eyeglasses since 4th grade.

  74. Pearl A says:

I’ve needed glasses for about a year now but just got insurance from my husbands job and had the money to go and get my eyes checked. Well I got my prescription but it was $180 with insurance to get my glasses which we can’t afford. I had to go and buy the cheapie reading glasses from the Dollar Store so I can read!!! I really would LOVE to have the Credit to help me get my glasses. Thank you
