In the interest of time, or lack there of, (I’m hosting a stop-’n-shop holiday open house in my home Tuesday evening) here are three random quick-tips that help me out in the kitchen.
- Before grating cheese, spray both sides of your hand grater with cooking spray. Smooth gliding, and no stuck on cheese = easy cleanup!
- Heat syrup before serving. I serve syrup in my coffee creamer (is that what it’s called? it looks like a miniature pitcher), since I don’t use it for it’s intended purpose. It looks nicer than a plastic bottle of syrup, warm syrup keeps the food warmer, and heating it thins the syrup a bit. We don’t use nearly as much this way, which is a money saver, (and probably a tooth saver) too!
- Need buttermilk? I’ve never purchased buttermilk, but I use some nearly every week. Simply add one tablespoon of vinegar to each cup of regular milk that the recipe calls for. I like to zap mine in the microwave for a few seconds and stir. You can also just let it sit for a minute or two. Works like a charm!

I am amazed at all the things I’m finding Vinegar is used for! Thanks for another tip!
Great tips.
GREAT TIPS! THANKS!!! Vinegar Rocks!
I also use plain low fat yogurt thinned with water.
I’ve never bought buttermilk either.
Just mix the milk and vinegar and let it sit, like you said. I’ve even used powdered milk for this and it seems to turn out just fine…
Great tips! I do the buttermilk idea, too. I hear you can do it with lemon juice as well.
I featured you on this weeks website spotlight! Love your blog!
