Taco Pizza

A fun twist on a family night favorite.  Bake your pizza and then set up a topping buffet so everyone can have it like they want it.

Taco Pizza

Crust

  • 1¼ c. cornmeal
  • 1¼ c. unbleached flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1½ tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. milk
  • 1/3 c. melted butter

Meat Mixture

  • ½ lb. hamburger
  • ½ lb. pork sausage
  • 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 1 (15 oz.) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 envelope taco seasoning mix (or make your own)
  • ¾ c. water
  • 2 c. shredded cheese (we like colby/monterey jack)

Toppings

  • lettuce
  • tomato
  • green onion
  • olives
  • additional cheese

Combine corn meal, flour, baking powder, and salt.  Add milk and melted butter; mix well.  Press onto the bottom and sides of a greased, 12 to 14 inch pizza pan.  I find a rolling pin helpful to get it spread out.  Bake at 400° for 10 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned.

Brown hamburger and sausage together.  Drain.  Stir in tomato paste, tomatoes, taco seasoning, and water.  Bring to a boil.  Simmer, uncovered, for 5-10 minutes.

Spread meat mixture over crust.  Top with cheese.  Bake at 400° for 10 minutes, or until cheese melts.

Place toppings in individual bowls.  Slice pizza.  Add preferred toppings individually.

  1. Yum! Though the time I made a similar recipe for my hubs, he ate the toppings off then got some honey for the cornbread crust. (Honey on cornbread is one of his favorites…)

Sent you happy thoughts today as I purchased my gingerbread house kit for next year at two bucks and change. :>) Goose proudly told the checkout lady “dat’s for next year!”

    • Yay for next year’s gingerbread house. I went all out and snagged the gingerbread village for $2.50. ;) Figured I’d have 3 “buildings”, one for each kiddo. (We’ll have to do it during baby’s nap time next year!

  2. I love this idea! So clever. I’ve done the whole “salsa, chicken, cheddar, etc” pizza before (and everyone loves it), but wouldn’t have thought of this. Love the topping bar! :)

  3. Looks yummy! I’ve been looking for a Taco Pizza recipe. We will definitely be trying this soon!

  4. That looks like a great meal to make for the grandkids. Great fun.

  5. What a great idea for a pizza!

  6. This look like the Ole! pizza at CiCi’s which my DH loves.

  7. I like this idea since I make taco meat ahead of time-freeze it cooked and reheat it in the microwave. I can’t wait to try this crust which looks like a Mexican twist with the cornmeal. My kids love mexican and we are making nachos grande a lot. I think I’ll add this to my menu next week. thanks.

  8. Nice! Kills 2 birds with 1 stone! :) What a creative combination, delish!

I’m having the very first GIVEAWAY on my blog. Please stop by to submit your entry. Good Luck! http://utry.it/2011/01/happy-birthday-to-meand-very-first.html#comments

  9. Oh that looks so good! I have a simple taco pizza recipe that you can throw together with hardly any “special” ingredients. Make your pizza like normal & then sprinkle black beans and salsa on top. We usually also have onion & green peppers with it. Yummy yummy!

  10. It looks and sounds delicious! Thank you for sharing the recipe.
