Substitute for a Double Boiler

I try to be a make do or do without kind of girl, instead of running out and spending money I don’t have on gadgets I don’t need very often.  One of those gadgets is a double boiler.  I don’t have one, and I usually make do by using the microwave or just skipping over “those recipes.”

When it was time to make a batch of hard lotion, though, I really did need a double boiler.  Turns out my KitchenAid mixer bowl sets beautifully in one of my saucepans, creating the perfect makeshift double boiler!  It doesn’t have to be fancy to be effective!

What kitchen gadgets or appliances do you make do without?  (I actually could probably clean out a couple boxes worth of other kitchen stuff if I tried really hard.)

  1. Wow, this is genius! I’m going to go take that double boiler off my Amazon wish list now.

  2. Oh– so many. I’m a gadget minimalist, for sure. Off the top of my head? A sifter. I just use a whisk. I do the same type of double boiler trick (though I have a small stainless bowl that fits one of my pans). I use fingers or forks instead of a pastry cutter. Oh, I’m sure there are many more… I’m cheap, er, creative in the kitchen. 😉

  3. That’s genius! I never thought of using my Kitchenaid bowl, I’ve always used one of my stainless steel mixing bowls since I don’t have a real double boiler.

  4. I use a stainless bowl, too!
I don’t have a cheese slicer, flour sifter, double boiler, garlic press, frosting applicators, rice cooker, or a kitchenaid mixer. Maybe someday I’ll take the last one off my list, though. 😉

  5. We have always found that we’re short on a lot of kitchen storage and that has pushed us to be kitchen minimalists as well. Cake decorating tools, a double boiler, gadgets like a cookie press, splatter guards for the microwave, and multiple pans are out. I have wanted a bread machine and a fruit dehydrator, but thus far do both of those activities the old-fashioned way.

  6. I do this too! I need a double boiler to make chocolates so I just put a pot in my skillet filled with water. Also who needs a deep fryer? I just pour oil into a pot that has high edges.

  7. I don’t have a microwave. Shocker! They take up too much room and I think they make the food taste horrible so when my broke, I just never replaced it. There’s only been 2 times that I regretted it, but I just got creative.
