Forget the little packages with sketchy ingredients. Homemade hot cocoa is where it’s at! Easy and delicious, my children go crazy when I add a candy cane to their hot cocoa mugs for an extra special treat.

Special Hot Cocoa
- 1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2/3 c. sugar
- pinch of salt
- 1/3 c. boiling water
- 6 c. milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- candy canes
Combine the cocoa, sugar and pinch of salt in a saucepan. Blend in the boiling water. Bring mixture to a slow boil, stirring constantly (I prefer to use a whisk). Simmer and stir for about 2 minutes. Stir in 6 cups of milk and heat until very hot, but not boiling. Remove from the heat and add vanilla. Pour into mugs. Garnish with a candy cane for a fun twist and yummy peppermint flavor.

I have a major hot cocoa addiction that started when I was just a kid. I drink a cup every night and more often when it’s cold out. The good thing is it helps me cut down on sweets- it is my dessert, usually. Just this year I started making it with milk instead of water and I can never go back now:)
I’m a huge fan of hot chocolate… although in our house even the kiddies like it much more chocolaty and less sweet. We pretty much reverse that amount… 2/3 cup cocoa and about 1/3 of sugar. Thanks for the idea about the candy canes – what a fun way to get into the Christmas season!
I wondered about that… I already reduced the amount of sugar in the original recipe, but maybe next time I’ll put even a little less and see what I can get away with.
That looks soooooo good:-)
Yum! We love homemade hot chocolate, too!
Peppermint cocoa? I’m there.:)
Who could resist that adorable drink? I’ve been putting cocoa in my coffee…can’t get enough of it. Thanks so much for linking up!
Yum! I got a fabulous single cup recipe for hot cocoa that is a hands down favorite in our house. Put one spoon of unsweetened cocoa and two spoons of sugar in a mug. Add a very small amount of half and half – just enough to make it a paste. Add hot milk to fill the mug and serve! Adjust ratio to personal preference (or add mint or vanilla). Enjoy!
Great idea to have a single-cup recipe! I might make some after the kids go to bed tonight…
