So, I’m co-coaching our 6yo son’s soccer team this year, and yesterday was our first practice. Yes, laugh if you will. I have been!
In the middle of a penalty kick drill, I noticed the high school football team jogging our way. Yes, my husband’s team. I figured they were running laps or something and carried on… until they were on our turf and no longer could be ignored.
I looked at them, teen boys suited up in pads and big grins. “Are we in your way?” I asked. Even with the expanse of the high school practice field, junior high practice field, and elementary playground strung together, I new they had “first dibs” on the territory.
“Nope.” They stopped jogging. And they started clapping. For us. For my kindergarten and first grade boys, who pretty much forgot their own names as their jaws dropped to the prickly grass.
When we snapped to, it was time to kick.
{clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap}
“Nice one!”
{clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap}
“Great kick!”
{clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap}
“Whoa! Close!”
{clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap}
They cheered for our boys, by name. And then they turned around and left.
To have the high school football team cheering us on in soccer practice? To observe my little guys “step up” a notch knowing they were watching? To witness the pride and smiles? To relay the whole event from my point of view to my husband who, of course, was orchestrating from afar, and have him exclaim with a laugh, “That’s just what I was going for!” Uh-huh. Definitely a Finer Thing.

What a neat thing for them to do! It shows that kindness is not dead!
That is so sweet! Almost brought a tear to my eye! You are right..definitely a finer thing! Thanks for sharing!
So sweet!
A delightful story!
Those kids will remember that FOREVER! Your husband is teaching those HS boys something good!
Awesome! (But, ahem, IS Coach making breakfast for your team?
)
Ha! Good one JL!!
Hehe — I asked him about that. He offered cereal. LOL
How awesome is that! My husband has coached our son’s soccer team since our son was 4 years old! I know how much better the kids practice when they see the older kids on other teams watching them and encouraging them! And what a great group of boys on the football team! I have tears in my eyes just imagining the scene! So great to know that your husband is helping to mold some excellent boys into great, caring, supportive future men!
That is definitely a finer thing. What a wonderful husband/coach that you have and what a great group of teenagers. You and your husband are doing a great job.
That’s so neat! I bet your soccer team went home and told their families at dinner last night, and that the football team’s random act of kindness spread a lot of smiles.
As for me, we are celebrating adopting a new kitty into our home.
How awesome is your husband!
Oh, and the football team, too!
The love of a small school…..Our football boys use to come in a read to our kiddos, the little guys LOVE the attention from those BIG football boys!!!
I love, love, love small towns. It is priceless for a teen to get to be a hero! This is a truly a finer thing!
Way cool. Those kids are blessed
