After our initial efforts, it seems that I’ve failed to report any gardening action. But just so ya know, we do have a garden, and it is growing!
One thing I’ve learned about my gardening abilities is that I can’t do seedlings. Don’t know what my problem is, but it’s best for me to go to the greenhouse and pay a little more for the plants that have been given a good start.
Here we have my three bell pepper plants (red, yellow, and green). Bring on the fajitas! Also, my lone broccoli plant; the others all went to seed before they produced anything. Should have done my research… I guess the scorching Kansas heat isn’t great for broccoli. Maybe I can plant some more in the fall? Or early next spring?
You can see my potatoes in the top right, too. I have very few potatoes out of pure laziness. I waited too long and the crazy March 30 blizzard hit and then I didn’t want to take up space in the garden for them. (excuses, excuses) They didn’t go in till the end of April. Next year I plan to get them in on March 17 (like that precision?) and after we dig them up I’ll plant something else in their place.
My tomatoes came from my neighbor. He has since given me several “volunteer” plum tomato plants that apparently sprouted up in his yard. I’m trying not to kill them, because last year I froze tons and we enjoyed them all winter in soups and such!
I purchased a couple of squash plants from the nursery, but for my zucchini… just stuck some seeds in the ground. Look at ‘em grow! Can’t wait to toss some fresh veggies on my grill! Should be soon; they are bloomin’.
And what’s a good garden without a mystery plant? Just like last year’s pumpkins, we didn’t plant this. I suppose some seeds of something that we tossed in the mulch pit (compost) decided to sprout and grow! We’re thinking cantaloupe. What do you think? I do know that whatever it is, it’s threatening to snuff out two of my tomato plants. I hope it produces something fun, because it’s taking over the garden!
Can’t wait to start adding fresh garden veggies to my meal plans! What about you? How does your garden grow?

Wow, everything is looking good! Your squash is really thriving, isn’t it?
Your mystery plant looks like cantaloupe to me; how fun! I always wait before I pull up “weeds” because I never know what treasure that plant might actually be. Last year I ended up with volunteer wild poppies, snap dragons, and Russian sage. The only bad thing is that the poppies decided to grown in the lawn, but my son knew how much I loved them and carefully mowed around them.
Your garden is looking really good!
I had TONS of volunteer plants this year. Really not for sure how we managed that, but it has been fun! I had 15 volunteer tomato plants that I gave my sister in law. I also had a bunch of surprise cucumbers all over the place. Considering I let my cucumber seedlings fry in the sun (oops!) this came in quite handy.
My father got me hooked on using Miracle Grow when I was younger. We had orange and lemon trees in our backyard that were almost dead, when he used that weekly on them. They not only grew back, but my mom couldn’t GIVE enough lemons and oranges away, after filling fridge and freezer with all that citrusy goodness.
Using it on our tomato plants last year, they grew almost 6ft tall! And each one gave us an abundance of fruit!
Just a thought…
wow everything in your garden is surely flourishing….my squash and zucchini are not nearly as spread out…hoping they take off soon…
WOW! Lovin’ your garden, Amy!
My tomatoes are looking like a jungle. I should have gotten cages. Going out this morning to prune some.
