Santa Cereal

Yep. It’s junk, and we try to avoid it most of the time, but Christmas isn’t most of the time.

One special treat that is fast becoming a favorite Christmas morning tradition at our house is Santa Cereal.  Since I never buy the fun cereal, the kids are thrilled when they receive a box of the super-sugary, brightly colored stuff beside their stocking.  It works well for mom and dad, too.

We try to sleep in during Christmas break.  When the kids get up earlier than us, they can make their own breakfast!  I don’t worry too much about ruining their health forevermore, partly because we fix a real breakfast/brunch later in the morning each day.  Any ill effects that come from eating too much sugar, highly processed grains, and all that icky food dye (green poop, anyone?!) all pass (pun totally intended) before school and our regular routine start up again.  Come on now, no way are those special boxes of cereal lasting more than a week!

Santa Cereal is a fun, cost effective treat that the guy in red can totally take credit for.  What special treats do you allow at Christmastime?

  1. Great idea! I don’t generally buy that cereal either, but having it as a special treat over break would be nice! My daughter would love that! It would make an easy Christmas morning breakfast!

  2. Sweet! I love this idea! Oh how I have missed the crappy cereal of my youth and this is a great excuse to bust out the Count Chocula!

  3. Oh my word! I thought we were the only family that did this! Every Christmas morning each of my kids have to go on a treasure hunt to find their special box of sugar cereal, lol!
    Great minds think alike. :)

    • Love the treasure hunt idea! And you know… I wonder if I got the initial idea from YOU in the first place. Have we talked about this before?!

  4. Ha! The green poop totally had me laughing. We don’t live in the U.S. and one thing we always ask for when people are visiting is cereal. We don’t specify a type, just something that’s a special treat for the kids. Well, the last group coming through brought about 10 boxes of highly dyed cereal. I had noticed the change in poop color each time they had a bowl (too many bottoms to wipe!), but my husband hadn’t. While out one evening, he called in a panic over our son’s green poop! A few days later when I uploaded pictures, I found a surprising picture of the green poop. GROSS!!!!

  5. What a cute idea! I can think of a few fun cereals that I wouldn’t mind seeing in MY stocking!

  6. Fabulous! I’m pretty sure we talked about this way back when I posted about “Vacation Cereal” (http://www.parentingmiracles.net/2010/07/vacation-cereal/) It is SO fun to be a “Yes Mom” and this is seems like a great guilt-free way to do it. :) What’s their fave? I’m thinking about introducing my kids to Cookie Crisp.

  7. SO fun! For our birthdays my mom used to hide our favorite cereal (Fruit Loops) and we’d have to find our breakfast. We thought it was so fun! It was the only time she bought cereal and I’m sure the fond memories far outweigh any health costs!

  8. Our special treat for our 3 boys to unrap is their own box of themed fruit snacks!
