All you never needed to know…
- As I was unloading grocery bags last weekend to take pictures for my Best Bargains post, I pulled out a 1/2 gallon of ice cream. Moose Tracks ice cream. “Where did this come from?” I asked my husband with that “caught you” tone. He had no idea. Seriously. We stole Moose Tracks from Dillons? I called the next day (it’s that conscience thing kicking in) and the customer service rep said “The person in front of you must have left it behind. Hope you like that flavor, because we’re not going to ask you to bring it back.” SCORE! Free Moose Tracks without a guilty conscience!
- Remember all those tiny tomatoes I didn’t know what to do with at the end of the summer? I ended up freezing them as is in quart bags. It has been so nice to pull out a bag for veggie beef soup, chili, etc. I just run them under water and the skins slip right off. Fresh tomatoes (free from my garden) in winter soup? Definitely a Finer Thing.
- Speaking of Finer Things, I’ve been pondering for many weeks the best way to share and celebrate the Finer Things in Life on my blog. Starting next week I’ll be hosting a weekly Finer Things carnival, where we can encourage each other in our pursuit of simple pleasures. Look for more info soon. I hope you’ll join us!
- I love a good deal, and I’ve enjoyed weekly posts by other bloggers that share where the best bargains can be found. I’m having a hard time, though, finding a blog that announces weekly Dillons (a Kroger affiliate) deals for my area. The Kroger deals that I’ve come across don’t often match my area ad. Does anyone know a blog that shares Kansas area Dillons deals? And yes, I’m trying to take the easy way out. I could match the ad to the coupons, etc. I just want someone else to do the work for me.
- We’re out of wheat flour. A few years ago that would be no big travesty, because I didn’t use it all that much. Now that I’m accustomed to making all of our bread (I haven’t purchased a loaf for over a year) and rolls and such with at least 1/2 wheat flour, white flour products just aren’t all that satisfying. This morning I needed to make bread, so I used the last cup of wheat flour and filled in with white. It’s okay, but I long for my richer, more filling bread. I’m still experimenting with different recipes. Does anyone have a nice, grainy bread recipe to share?
- I finally marched the last of our Christmas decorations downstairs this morning. And I have yet to send out our Christmas letter… that I wrote on December 26. Is there an award for procrastination? I’m a winner, for sure!
- We have a mouse. At least, we had a mouse. I’m sure it’s still scampering about somewhere. I’ve been scared to go into the kitchen after 9:00 at night since last weekend. I was sitting at the computer (big surprise) which is located in the dining room, which is located between the kitchen and the living room. Lance was watching tv in the living room, and I could hear, over the noise of the tv, something in the kitchen. A scratching noise. Glued to my seat, I sent my knight in shining armor to the kitchen to investigate. I knew it was bad when he stomped his foot. *sigh* He doesn’t know where the mouse ran off to, but he does know that it was carrying a piece of caramel popcorn across the floor. Friends, I’m not the best housekeeper, but I had just swept that floor that evening. I don’t know where he got the popcorn! All together now, “EEEEWWWWWWW.”
And on that note, have a lovely weekend!
Thanks to Jen for hosting Quick Takes.

Amy,
I once returned from a vacation to find that a whole family of mice was feasting on a bag of Hershey’s Kisses that were sitting on the counter! I made my husband take the whole family (as we caught them) outside and put them in a field.
Anyway, I wanted to share my Whole Wheat Multigrain bread recipe with you that my husband and I have been adjusting for a year!

Amy! That was me (Nettacow) that told you to stick them in the freezer and run frozen under water to get the skins off! So glad you are enjoying them! I used some of my homemade tomato sauce in some Spanish rice yesterday and realized that it is *much* stronger than regular tomato sauce even though it is thinner. So, I’ll have to decrease the sauce and increase water next time.
I LOVE Moose Tracks! Hope you enjoy it – but you might end up wanting more.
I still have my Christmas tree up – and the bad thing is that it’s only 4 ft. tall and pre-decorated, so all I have to do is put in back in the box…
I HATE mice! I think I have one in my house – the cats will be GLUED to the stove, and I’ve heard scratching noises in the wall. Double EWW! At least the cats are keeping the mice from emerging so that I can’t see them. But I haven’t spent much time in the kitchen recently – and you can tell… Darn mice!
We’ve had mouse adventures, too! That’s great that you’ve won so many swagbucks! I have 53 now. Is your bread recipe easy? I don’t have a bread mixer or machine, but I’d like to try making bread. I’m looking forward to the Finer Things carnival!
The little tomatoes… Why did I not think of that? Instead, I just ate them all and suffered greatly with acid reflux. LOL
I love random posts…they are so enlightening! I love Moose tracks ice cream and I hate mice in my house, not to be confused with Mice track ice cream and moose in your house. I also chopped and froze a bunch of tomatoes that a neighbor gave me and it’s wonderful taking them out in the winter for recipes. Yum!
I can’t wait to read about your carnival.
I love that you are from Kansas. My husband’s family is from Oakley and we visit there every other year.
Two things – I find that adding wheat flour to recipes makes them more filling and when I don’t add it, I am starving in an hour or two. Also, a mouse is much better than the flying squirrel we found in our basement before Christmas. LOL still gross though.

oops, http://www.moneysavingmom.com
I love moose tracks icecream! Yum!
We have had our share of mouse adventures too earlier this summer in our garage! Thankfully hubby was able to trap it out.
As for shopping at Dillions, head over to BeCentsable’s Grocery Gathering. They have lots of different blogs linked & listed with the different stores around the country! I checked and there is one blog there for Dillions in the Topeka area.
here is a link to check it out… http://www.becentsable.net/search/label/Grocery%20Gathering
I was going to suggest the same thing for Kansas’ The Grocery Gathering.
I haven’t had moose tracks in ages. It is delish!!
http://thegroceryweekly.blogspot.com/ is the place to get your sales and deals for Kansas. Shannon lives in Topeka,KS. She lists the best deals each week in comparison to Aldi, even with coupon match ups.
