Prom Week 2009

Perhaps it’s not enough that he coaches football, basketball and track (ahem); Lance is also co-sponsor for the junior class.  In Tiny Town, that equals a big prom week for the two of us.

Just because I’m a curious sort of gal, how many of you decorated your own prom space… tables included?  Yes, we (the junior class, their sponsors, the kids’ parents, and any other suckers volunteers they can pull off the streets) even decorate tables, because a steak dinner is served right where they have the prom dance.

I worked with a couple of moms to assemble these pillars and the arch.  Beautiful, right?

The junior students transformed our gym lobby into a “Love Story” paradise, complete with working fountain. Pretty fancy for Tiny Town!

Check out my hot date.  ;-)   All the long hours and hard work is worth it when we get to enjoy the evening with such a great group of students.

Speaking of great students… I’ve sung their praises before, but allow me a moment with my two young daughters:

Dear Girls,

Someday you will spend endless hours and absurd amounts of (your own) money perfecting your well-defined makeup and hair for a fancy dance that adults around the world don’t understand.  The surge of excitement that they felt many years ago on their own prom night has faded into the background, replaced by career stress, economic uncertainty, and years of sheltering their children from heartache.

Press on, sweet girls, and enjoy your evening.  But when choosing your date, please (oh please) search high and low for a quality, honorable, God-fearing, talented, hardworking, trustworthy young man such as one of these.  If you do not heed your mother’s advice, prepare to spend your prom night in our living room playing cards with your father.

Love you,

Mom

  • Gratituesday – I’m so thankful for our quality kids and for the opportunity to take part in their big night.  Much gratitude to my parents, also, for keeping our kids so we could hang out at the after prom party until 4:30 a.m.
  • Tackle it Tuesday - It takes quite a bit of effort to turn a school gym into a Love Story paradise in one week!  And, oh… you should see the herculean effort that goes into entertaining 50 high schoolers from midnight until 5 in the morning.  Seriously!
  • Talk About Tuesday – Because I just love sharing the goings on of Tiny Town.  It’s the place to be!  Oh, and I really do want to hear from you.  What was your prom like?

  1. That looks absolutely beautiful! I am so impressed!

I loved prom, but I also loved high school. So, what would you expect?
However, our prom was at a slick, luxury hotel and consequently could have been anyone’s prom… I think having it at a lovingly-transformed place at the school would have made it much more special. Really, I do.

I did parade around the house in my prom dress the other day after finding it deep in my daughter’s closet. (It was from 1990) and my husband asked “Who did THAT to you? He thought it was a hideous bridesmaid’s dress. Hmm. Oh well!)
And you look fantastic, btw. Not at all like my prom dress :)

  2. So beautiful, Amy! You all did a great job decorating–and what a sweet, sweet letter to your girls.

Uh, my prom. Loved junior prom but by the time my senior prom rolled around–I was over it! After Prom was a blast both years, though.

Look at you in your pretty dress!!!

Um, I went to FIVE proms. One each year at my high school, and I also had the fun of attending an out-of-town prom one year. One dress actually was hot pink. Ouch.

  4. Sarah says:

Gorgeous decorations! I love the letter to you daughters, totally loving and funny advice :)

  5. What beautiful decorations! And you look stunning.

    Fabulous letter to your daughters!

  6. Great prom. My junior year (1988) we transformed our cafeteria into our prom. We did it mostly with balloons. We had a thousand balloon drop (made with netting and fishline) and lots of helium balloons. It was pretty for the money we spent.

Love the letter to your daughters!

  7. Nimmi says:

Wow what a beautiful decoration – and the letter to your daughters made me chuckle.

  8. L2L says:

wonderfully said!!!! I’ll have to copy that and save it for my own daughter, put chills on my arms, what love pours forth in your wisdom for you girls!!!! Oh and wow, it looks beautiful.

  9. zoe says:

WOW, I am in awe of how much work must have gone into that. You should all be VERY proud of yourselves, WOW!

  10. That looks so cool and so much fun!! Great letter to your girls too:-) I wish I had done something like that for my older daughter.

  11. Wow! You look amazing! I know my prom wasn’t even close to that nicely decorated! Good job! :)

  12. Tracey says:

Love your letter to you daughters! Mine for my girls would read just the same – ending and all!!

  13. Carrie says:

Super fancy! And what a hottie you are!!

  14. MNKristy says:

Wow! Great job! I never attended prom as a student and my daughter, who graduated last year, did not attend prom either since her boyfriend was already graduated. So I have never experienced prom. And now my boys are homeschooled, so they probably won’t do prom either. Oh well!

  15. Oh, I remember decorating for my prom! How fun that you were able to “go to prom” with your honey! :)

    Blessings,
    Michele

  16. Christy says:

That looks like so much fun!

  17. It looks beautiful!! The proms around here (even in our tiny town) are held at a big restaurant/hotel/catering hall… too much I think. Many parents/teachers would like to get it back to the simpler prom, at the school as you did. The prom bids (tickets) this year are $250 per couple. Totally unnecessary!! Sounds like a great evening!! (My parents used to chaperone the proms, since my father was a teacher, and my husband is a chaperone, but they’re not allowed to bring their spouses!! If they were I’d love to go!!)

  18. Jan says:

I did not decorate for my proms. Banquet hall/catering kind of proms. My kids had the homemade decorated proms but all the work is done by parents and is revealed as a big surprise the night of prom. Alot more fun and affordable. Your decorations, you and your husband, and the students looked great!!

  19. Kelli says:

I am almost positive I was in your little town when you were taking it all down- My Fiance is in the guard and I was visiting him on his day off from flood duty- Small world!

And yes your decorations were beautiful!!

  20. Melody says:

You did a great job decorating!

We did decorate the tables for Junior Prom when I was in school because in our town the Junior class is in charge of raising money, picking the theme, and decorating.

Back when I was in school, 19 years ago, we had the dinner at the school before the dance. Now they go out to eat on their own and the money goes to an after prom at the school which, because my child is a Junior this year, I will be working at.

I have not stayed up until 5 am in years. Should be interesting.

  21. Sherry says:

What fun! Great pic of you and your dh!
    Wonderful letter to your girls.
