No School Tomorrow

I remember as a kid being glued to the tv every time a snowflake would fall out of the sky or whenever the winter wind would whip more than 30 miles an hour.  Are we closed?  Are we closed? My dad was a teacher and coach and then my principal (yes, it’s true) so I’d also get a little giddy every time I heard the phone ring after 10 pm or before 7 am.  “No school today” must rank as one of my favorite phrases growing up.

Some things never change.  Guess who was on the other line when I picked the phone up an hour ago?  “Amy, this is Mrs. K.  Will you please tell Lance that school has been canceled tomorrow?”  Yes. Ma’am. I. Will.

I feel like a silly schoolgirl again!  Even though my 3-year-old puked a few hours ago and I know that tomorrow may not bode well for the fun factor, I’m still so excited to have a surprise “weekend day” with the family.  I envision lots of Go Fish and some hot chocolate.  Maybe a movie or two and piles of books under blankets.

Yea for wintry-weather-mix days!  (um, please don’t take my power)  Is anyone celebrating with me?

LOL! We have the same experiences here! (And growing up as well…my father, both a teacher and a coach too, but NOT my principal, thank goodness…I was the only one of my friends who didn’t have to listen to the radio to hear the school closings. We got our phone call by 5am!) And now my children are living the same life…not so bad! My husband teaches and coaches at the high school my children will be attending…so, they’ll feel our pain!! Although I no longer get a phone call for myself, I seem to be the one fielding my husbands phone calls late at night or early in the morning…then I do the “no school celebratory dance” Woo Hoo!! We’re due for a storm later tonight, into tomorrow (your storm is probably heading our way!) and hopefully we’ll be getting that same phone call tomorrow! (too bad just another day tacked on in June!!)

My best friend’s mom was a busdriver for the school system and so she got the call SUPER early on. I loved it! I can still remember the excitement of waking up early and squinting out into the dim winter morning to see if we had gotten buried under snow… :)

Enjoy your family today together! I love that you’re embracing this unexpected gift of togetherness.

  4. I always LOVED snow days! Even though we homeschool now, I still let my kids have snow days off that our school district takes off. There is just something magical about an unexpected day off — I want them to know that same joy. :)

How fun! I remember watching the news growing up, and cheering when our school showed up on the list of schools cancelled. Have a great time with your family!

I sort of thought I might be the only person in the world who had so not grown up as to still get excited when it snowed and school was canceled (even though it’s my kids’ school now)! I love the cozy feeling, I love the lazy morning, I love the way you feel like you’re on vacation by surprise.

We (I live in northeastern Oregon state) usually have about one actually significant snow a winter here that lasts a couple days — and this winter we’ve had two feet of snow for two weeks just before Christmas, and more snow on the ground right now, and Arctic-ly cold temperatures in between. I love it all! Aren’t seasons great?? kristin

I did the same thing as a child. My children do not get that joy of snowdays since we homeschool. But last year we came up with SUNdays, when it is warm and sunny in the spring we cancel school. I enjoy it as much as snowdays. Have a wonderful day with your children.

I loved and still love snow days!

I feel so nostalgic for the “good old days” of waiting to find out if there’s a cancellation…lucky you being on the inner circle of such important information back then!

Happy Snow Day to you~enjoy it!

  10. We have already had 2 snow days this year. The first was the last day before Christmas vacation!!

Oh, I remember how fun snow days were…especially when we all were in Belpre! We had our own snow day today since we don’t have preschool on Tuesdays…PJs all day long!
