Little Boy’s Prayer

It all started last January when my children rejoiced at the news of another baby cousin.  Not a moment later, our then 3 year old piped up:  “When we having another baby, Mom?  I want a baby.”

My husband and I looked at each other, knowing that his wish was our own and had been for many months already.  “We’ll just have to pray about it, Buddy.”

Thus began an evening tradition.  Before every.single.supper our little guy would petition:

God, we thank you for a baby

because we want a baby.

We need a baby

because we like to have a baby.  Amen

Pure and persistent, he was. And confident!  (God, we THANK YOU for a baby…)

It nearly became a family joke last Easter when we sat around the dinner table at the in-laws.  Papa asked who wanted to pray and our little guy’s hand shot up lightening fast.  Stop the presses!  We had to explain before the prayer that No, we’re not expecting, but we’re sure praying about it.  And then he prayed:

God, we thank you for a baby

because we want a baby.

We need a baby

because we like to have a baby.  Amen

His little heart would not be deterred.  Not until preschool started last fall did he waiver from his prayer.  His 4 year old self found appeal in a simple, new prayer learned at school.  And we joined him:  “God is great, God is good…”

Months later, I was certain that he’d forgotten all about the baby.  But we hadn’t.

I was wrong.

Just last week we joined hands before supper, and out of the blue came his strong 4 year old voice:

God, please give us a baby.

And that was it.

Our little guy didn’t forget.

And neither did the Big Guy.

Imagine our joy and gratitude as we told our little prayer warrior and his sisters just today…

that his prayers have been answered!

  126. Wow. Wow. Wow. Such a sweet, sweet blessing to get to share with your little prayer warrior. It reminds me of what my little gal would tell everyone who asked if she had any siblings. She’d answer, “No, but I pray for one everyday.” I was overjoyed to get to hear her adjusted answer of “Yes, and it’s bc I asked God for one.” Love the simplicity of the way it all makes sense to these precious little people.

  132. Our first child asked for a baby for our family from the time she learned to speak (which was already many months after we’d begun praying). We told her many times that Jesus is the one who gives babies. . . let’s ask Him. One day during potty training, she told me she wanted “Mommy go to heaven.” What?!? After many questions and some confusion on my part, she expanded, “Mommy, go to heaven. Jesus give Mommy baby!”

Short version of the story; 17 months after she began praying, our second daughter was born and God made her ours through adoption! What joy it was to tell our first that Jesus was answering her prayer and we were leaving to get her baby sister! And the love between our 4 1/2 year old and our 1 1/2 year old is amazing. =)

  133. This story reminds me so much of my own. One day on the way home from church when my son was five, almost six, he had told me of the story of Hannah they’d done in Sunday school, and he said Mom, maybe if we really pray hard, we can have another baby. I smiled a knowing smile, and said hmm, that sounds like a very good idea. I was about 2 months pregnant at the time, with his little sister, who is now 11.

  134. That is sooo cute! And congratulations!

  135. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Thats a pretty sweet picture. Did your son prayed every day for a little baby?!?! 🙂
