Layered Chocolate Pie Dessert

by Amy on November 9, 2009

I’ve heard this dessert called many a name over the years:  Layered Chocolate Pie Dessert, Chocolate Delight, Robert Redford Dessert, S** in a Pan, and thatchocolatelayeredstuffwehavetohaveateveryfamilygathering. It’s so good!

Layered Chocolate Pie Dessert

Crust:

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter (softened)
  • 1/2 c. nuts

Mix flour, butter, and nuts.  Press into the bottom of a 9×13 pan.  Bake 20 minutes at 350°.  Allow to cool.

Filling:

  • 8 oz. cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 1 c. powdered sugar
  • 4 1/2 oz. tub whipped topping

Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and whipped topping.  Spread over cooled crust.

Pudding:

  • large (6 oz.) box chocolate instant pudding
  • 3 c. milk

Mix pudding and milk according to package directions.  Pour/spread over cream cheese layer.

Topping:

  • 9 oz. carton whipped topping
  • nuts, chopped candy bars, chocolate shavings

Spread pudding with whipped topping.  Sprinkle your choice of nuts or candy on top.  Refrigerate until serving.

**For Easter, my grandma likes to make it with lemon pudding, sprinkled with pecans.

**Fantastic way to use up some Halloween candy!

My favorite dessert! We call it Chocolate Delight. My husband can never remember the name and always ends up describing it to me. I’ve never thought to put candy on the top. Reese’s are my favorite…maybe I’ll make some today.

Now there’s something I haven’t had in a very long time! My mom would always make it and call it Chocolate Supreme or Lemon Supreme. A nice proper name.:-)Hers always would set up so nice so that when she served it, it would be in nice squares. Mine always turned out more sloppy and ‘eat in a bowl” consistency, but still very good.

Growing up, we had friends who called this Piggy Pudding. No idea why. My mom liked her name better. :-)

A lady in our church makes a Robert Redford dessert, but I don’t think it’s quite the same thing.

We call it Chocolate Surprise. The lemon version is Lemon Surprise. I actually like the lemon better.

Your blog title is “The finer things in life” and right under that is “Layered Chocolate Pie Dessert”- yes, it is one of the finer things! This sounds so good and your directions make it “do”able! Count me in a a major chocolate lover so this is my kind of recipe.

My MIL makes this all of the time with a varitey of pudding flavors, usually lemon. She calls it Layered _____ Dessert. She generally uses all lite ingredients as my FIL has to watch his sugar these days. Your picture looks so yummy that I just might have to make some for us.

We call it Layer Dessert. A favorite variation uses vanilla or banana pudding instead of chocolate and a layer of sliced bananas between the cream cheese and pudding. Actually the BEST is a combination of the two — a layer of sliced bananas and then chocolate pudding. oh man oh man i want some!

We call it Four Layer Dessert and I use a small box each of chocolate and vanilla pudding mix. Love the tangy taste of cream cheese in it. My husbands favorite dessert.

I bought the stuff to make this tonight. I hope it turns out great! It looks delicious. This recipe serves about how many? It fills a 9×13 pan?

@Alana, Yes ~ 9×13 pan. You can cut it into 12 BIG pieces, or go 16 for more. Sometimes we don’t cut it at all. Just let people scoop it up with a spoon.

When you are making the crust, are the nuts to be chopped up or ground up. Planning on making these for thanksgiving. What type of nuts do you recommend?

29 Amy November 24, 2009 at 9:20 pm

I use chopped pecans.

My momma made this for us over 30 years ago and we called it “Chocolate Nut Dessert”. When we moved to Georgia, we found out some call it “Yum Yum” and others make it with Butterscotch pudding instead of chocolate. Either way it’s so good! It’s the best when served the next day (my favorite part is when the chocolate pudding mixes into the layers. Makes it look like another layer even thought it’s not!)

I like it served the next day, too! In fact, I usually make it the day before taking it to a gathering.
