It’s Shoebox Time!

National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts is November 18-25. Are your boxes ready?

Operation Christmas Child

My very favorite give of the year is joining with Samaritan’s Purse to send shoebox gifts around the world for Operation Christmas Child. I like it because

1) It’s a tangible way to teach both gratitude and giving to children, and they can participate fully.
2) We truly feel part of a team as millions of boxes are delivered around the world.
3) It’s something I can shop and plan for throughout the year, buying items on sale, getting the best bang for my buck.

Last week our grade school church classes gathered all of our goods. We packed and prayed over 18 boxes. This week, November 18-25, is National Collection Week, and there’s still time to join in the fun and impact a child’s life!

If you’re unsure where to start, Samaritan’s Purse offers suggestions on how to pack a shoebox.  Take you box to your nearest drop off location, and then, if you’d like, you can even follow your box around the world to see where it lands!

Is shoebox packing a tradition for your family? What are your favorite items to pack?

  1. I love this time of year too. And I’m off to church to check the boxes we dropped off to see if I accidentally dropped my checkbook into one of them :(

  2. We’ve been packing for 14 years now. Two years ago I became a Church Relations year-round volunteer in our area. This year I had a baby (#5) in June, and I wasn’t able to collect as much as I have in the past. I really didn’t know if I could do a church packing party this year. Two weeks ago our Children’s Church leader told me she had been collecting with the kids over the summer, so we decided that maybe we might have enough items to do a party after all. We ran out of boxes, used ziploc bags to contain items until we could find boxes, and still had tubs of stuff left over! It was truly a “loaves and fishes” kind of moment. Love the way the Lord reminds me that it’s Him and not me!

    • Oh my goodness, I love that story! And 14 years?! See, THIS is why I love social media and blogs. I was SO very out of the loop before. I’ve only known about the shoeboxes for 5 years!
