We consider ourselves a pretty frugal family, but even we have our limits. On Monday, when our 14-year-old television went retro on us, displaying only a black and white picture, we knew the end was near. Although our children have been mesmerized this week with the lack of color, “Look! That’s so cool!”, hubby and I have been less than impressed.
It’s time to buy a new t.v.
Luckily for us
- We have the cash saved up, because we expect that televisions and such won’t last forever.
- We didn’t jump on the new flat screens a few years ago just because they were new. Prices have gone way down, and we will reap the benefits.
- Our Christmas gift to each other will be taken care of weeks in advance.
As I was folding laundry in the living room earlier, drafting an informative post in my mind about the frugal benefits of planning ahead, I glanced up at my 4-year-old son, tv remote in hand. On the screen was the word “color” and he was riveted with the way the color faded in and out much the same way as the volume.
My revised frugal tv-buying tip of the day? Don’t. Let your 4 year old fix the old one instead.

Lol. Reminds me of the time my nephew who was about 18 months at a time figured out how to mute the tv.We kept turning the tv up tryibg to see what was wrong. There was a master mute option on the menu and he managed to find it and mute the tv.
Oh too funny! More miles out of the current tv.
We’ve learned more on how to operate the remote from the 2 year old than we ever did from the salesman. Oh, THAT’S what that button does! Too funny!
Oh my word is that funny! Well now what are you getting yourselves for Christmas?
@Stephanie, Good question! Now we have options!
Now you have time for the price of flat screens to go down even further!
I love this!
that’s GREAT!
(you got my vote – good luck!)
Oh, I just love when things like that happen. Makes you very appreciative of children’s curious minds (and fingers).
Yikes!
Ohhh… Now you have to figure out what to get each other for Christmas!
Hee..hee!! Too funny!! Up until the summer we had a Console TV…remember those??!! The ones encased in the “wooden” like box with the felt-type speakers??!! Yah…one of those!! My husband never wanted to have Super Bowl parties because of it!! But I’ll tell you, they don’t make them like that anymore! Our new flatscreen (gift from MIL) doesn’t even compare!!!
@The Cozy Country Home, Oh, good. I feel much better about my small screen/big tube tv.
Yes, I remember the console…
That is hilarious!
Too funny! Yep. Amazing the things that can get fixed that way.
What a great storey! I would never have thought of that! But we have stuff happen like that all the time, usually after the fact.
When we first moved into our new to use house years ago, we didn’t realize there was a switch in the kitchen the turned the power to the dish washer off. So one day we thought it just quit working. So we eventually went out and bought a new one, my dad installed it and that didn’t work. It was then that he said, Hey, what does this switch do? Hmmm, so we could have saved ourselves some money had we realized it before we got rid of the old one and had the new one installed!
@Jenny Zepf, Oh no! I’ve never heard of a master switch for the dishwasher.
Thanks for the laugh!!!
Very funny. Sometimes kids can be very intuitive – especially about electronics.
Now that is awesome!
