Healthy Blender Ice Cream

One frugal summer treat that we enjoy over and over is healthy “blender ice cream.”  It’s nothing more than a super thick smoothie, really, but it is thick and plenty sweet, and only takes about two minutes to whip up from start to finish.

The key to tasty blender ice cream is to use lots of frozen bananas.  After that, your options are limitless!  Here are a few of our favorites.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge Ice Cream

  • frozen bananas
  • peanut butter
  • chocolate syrup or fudge topping
  • milk

Strawberry Banana Ice Cream

  • frozen bananas
  • frozen strawberries
  • milk

Tropical Ice Cream

  • frozen bananas
  • frozen strawberries
  • pineapple
  • milk

Fill the blender with frozen fruit, then add milk.  I like to start with a small amount of milk, and pulse my blender on the “chop ice” setting.  If it’s too thick, I add a little more milk, and coax the frozen fruit to the bottom of the blender (while it’s off!) with a spoon.  My ice cream turns out about the consistency of soft serve.  We all love it, and it’s never necessary to add any sweetener to the all fruit and milk varieties.

  2. We make the chocolate pb one all the time but we’ve never called it blender ice cream ( i love that term BTW). I use my homemade choco sauce: so I guess that makes it a health food, right:)

  3. I may have to experiment with my Big Boss Blender. It only has about a 3 cup jar, but that’s OK. I want to try making some sugar-free vanilla ice cream for my dear diabetic husband. =)

  4. Forgot to add that we can sometimes get the over-ripe bananas at our local grocery store. These would be great to freeze and use in this.

    • That’s exactly what we use! I grab ALL the “red-taped” clearance bananas I can find when we go to the store, and we freeze big batches of them.

  5. We make this too !! I’m a vegan, so this is my “go-to” treat on a hot day !! The first time I made it, the kiddos were fighting over my bowl (literally) !

    My favorite is frozen bananas, a spoonful of cocoa powder, a (big) spoonful of natural peanut butter, and a dash of chocolate soy milk. Yum !

    And it’s okay to eat the entire bowl because it’s healthy, right ?! 🙂

  6. I’ve seen recipes similar to this floating around and I’ve definitely had my interest piqued! But I must ask… does it taste REALLY banana-y? I don’t mind a little banana, but I don’t want to be eating banana mush… 🙂

    • Honestly? Not at all! The chocolate peanut butter one reminds us of Sonic’s peanut butter fudge shakes, with a hint of banana. But maybe I just scoop a lot of peanut butter and chocolate in there. LOL

    “Ninja Turtle ice cream” – Pistachio, avocado, salad greens
    Blueberry basil
    Vanilla, walnuts, coconut oil
    blueberry, beet
    avocado, chocolate
    cinnamon, walnut

  9. My 2-yo loves chocolate banana ice cream. Since we never seem to have chocolate syrup on hand (hubs has a serious chocolate milk problem :), I found that just adding cocoa powder tastes pretty good too. Owen doesn’t know the difference and even I think it tastes pretty good!
