It’s no secret that we’re a mobile society. While we all appreciate and strive for the sit-down family supper, sometimes fast food is just necessary. But not only is fast food an unhealthy and rather costly option; where we live, it isn’t exactly convenient. Keeping the freezer and pantry stocked with grab-n-go staples stretches our food budget and eases the stress when we need to go.
Here are some foods we can easily take out the door.
- pigs in a blanket
- pizza pockets
- brown bag burritos
- breakfast burritos
- muffins (some favorites here)
- granola bars
- breakfast cookies
- bierocks
- hot pockets
- carrot sticks
- trail mix
- fresh fruit
- dried fruit (raisins, apricots)
With a little planning, plain ol’ fast food takes a backseat to good food fast.
What foods do you keep handy when you’re on the run?

If you know ahead of time that the evening will be crazy and you will need to eat something on the run, then I have an idea. I like to use chicken tenders and make fried chicken. Through it all in tupperware and chill until time to go. We like fried chicken cold around here. Add a slice loaf of homemade bread and a bag of carrots sticks and you have a meal that can be eaten anywhere.
Thanks for the link Amy! I like to keep bagels on hand because they can be eaten for practically any meal. I get them at Wal mart for .89 when they go on sale and stock up!
Thanks for the links. We love any of these. I usually have some muffins in the freezer already made. Which reminds me that I need to make some more along with some pizza pockets!!
Thanks!!! I was thinking while at the Zoo on tuesday I needed some on the go food items!!!
That’s a great list:-)
I really need to work on some freezer food for the summer. The heat will be upon us soon.
Thanks for sharing such a great list!

This is a great list and an important tip. We ate more fast food than I would have liked on our recent trip out East but, even so, I was so happy to have packed fruit, granola bars, juice, etc… definitely minimized the “damage”.
I’ve been seeing the recipes for homemade hot pockets up everywhere lately… guess that means I should try making them!! Thanks.
My toddler loves goldfish and cheerios for a snack while we are on the run!
