French Breakfast Puffs

Looking for an easy, indulgent treat for breakfast?  French Breakfast Puffs will do it!  I first had these yummy mini-muffins in my classroom, believe it or not.  One of my sixth graders had her mom bring her favorite breakfast for the class to share on her birthday.  Fun!  They’d make a fantastic addition to any bridal or baby shower brunch menu.

French Breakfast Puffs

  • 1/3 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 6 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar combined with 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Beat together butter, sugar, and egg.  Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.  Stir in alternately with milk.  Fill greased mini-muffin cups 2/3 full.

Bake until golden brown, 18-22 minutes at 350°

Immediately roll in melted butter and then in sugar/cinnamon mixture.

Makes 2 dozen mini-muffins.

Amy’s Lazy Tips

** I’m not a big sifter, but I do sift the flour for this recipe.  I add the baking powder, salt, and nutmeg separately, then sift in the flour.

** Instead of rolling the whole muffin in butter and then sugar/cinnamon, I simply dip the top in the butter then dip it in the cinnamon/sugar mixture.  Plenty decadent and less mess.

  1. Wow! These look AMAZING! Can’t wait to try them!!!

  2. It’s after midnight and I’m actually tempted to go throw these together tonight! Lol Look so yummy! 🙂

  3. I really really need to make these in the morning (a few hours from now). My hubby is working overnight and could use a tasty snack-sized breakfast when he gets home. I would get so many kisses for these! Thanks Amy! =)

  4. OH, my! These look scrumptious! Have you tried to freeze these? 😀

  5. LOVE this! I will be trying these out for a special breakfast treat!

  6. Those look delicious, I can’t wait to try them.

  7. Um YUM! Similar to Tastefully Simple’s Cinnamon Muffin Melts or whatever they’re called. Love it!

    • Oooo, I’ll have to look those up. Tastefully Simple was one of my favorite magazines/websites… until I found blogs. 😉

  8. oh wow these look amazing. It also looks like something my father in law and husband would eat.

  9. YUM! thanks for sharing!

  10. Katherine says:

So are these a cross between a muffin and a cake donut?

    • Hmmm, I’ve always considered them a “rich, sugary muffin” but I could see where some might taste a cake donut in there.

  11. I made these this am, except I made them full size rather than in mini-form. I used softned butter and made a cinnamon-sugar butter to spread on them rather than coating the top w/melted butter and cinnamon sugar mixture…YUMMY! My three kids (2,4,6) each ate two and were asking for a third…thankfully there was fruit to distract them or I think they would have finished the pan!
Thanks for the delicious recipe that will be made many more times in the future!

  12. Oh, these look wonderful, what a great weekend treat. I can’t wait to make them, maybe we will have to have a whole buffet of breakfast treats from Tasty Tuesday. I don’t know where to start.

  13. Yum! We made these yesterday for breakfast and they were DEVOURED! My two boys were so excited to get doughnuts (since we never buy them!) Thanks! 🙂
