I’m not a fan of weeds in my vegetable garden. Actually, sometimes I am, but that’s only because I can’t always tell the difference between the weeds and the plants. The thing is though, we actually like to eat the veggies we grow (novel idea, I know!) and I depend on child labor to get the garden growing. Spraying on harsh weed killers? Not really an option.
This week we tamed the green a bit with a frugal (free!) natural method. After raking to loosen the soil and yanking some weeds, the children laid newspaper around our plants, and then helped daddy pile on some straw.
After piling on the straw, they gave everything a good drink. The (free) newspaper and (free) straw serve to block the weeds and help any moisture soak in.
Here’s to fewer weeds and less frequent watering, making this busy mom’s job a lot easier!
