Free Weed Suppressor {Frugal Gardening 101}

I’m not a fan of weeds in my vegetable garden.  Actually, sometimes I am, but that’s only because I can’t always tell the difference between the weeds and the plants.  😉  The thing is though, we actually like to eat the veggies we grow (novel idea, I know!) and I depend on child labor to get the garden growing.  Spraying on harsh weed killers?  Not really an option.

This week we tamed the green a bit with a frugal (free!) natural method.  After raking to loosen the soil and yanking some weeds, the children laid newspaper around our plants, and then helped daddy pile on some straw.

After piling on the straw, they gave everything a good drink.  The (free) newspaper and (free) straw serve to block the weeds and help any moisture soak in.

Here’s to fewer weeds and less frequent watering, making this busy mom’s job a lot easier!

How’s your garden growing this week?  Feel free to link up your progress! Be sure to pay a visit to Getting Freedom and Smockity Frocks to see what’s happening with their green!

  1. I will SO be doing this! Hubs expanded our second garden at Grandma’s farm AGAIN this year. Plus it’s nice and close to the barn where there is a big supply of old straw. :>)

    • I saw a Tiny Town country “neighbor” describing her 5,000 sq. ft. garden on FB the other night. OH MY GOODNESS. I have to go check it out!

  2. We do this with newspaper and leaves. We use cardboard and leaves in the walkways. My teenage boys are so tired of hauling leaves but then one made the comment the other day that we have less weeds this year. Amazing!

    This is my first time to your blog, I found you through A Virtuous Woman. I’m sure I’ll be visiting often.

  3. I definitely need to mulch, the wind is drying my ground out faster than I can keep it watered.

  4. I never thought of combining newspaper with straw! With all the rain we’re having, we’re getting lots of weeds already in some beds. It’s very frustrating watching them grow daily!

  5. Courtney says:

    What a great idea!!!!!!!!! Another way to recycle newspapers. Thanks!!

  6. Coffee grounds and haircut trimmings are great pest deterrents as well!

    • I’ll have to remember that! Maybe start collecting a stash. Actually, the barber is right across the street. That may come in handy. 🙂

  7. I’m glad you were able to do this and that I mentioned it. 😉 You won’t be sorry you spent the time to do this. Now, I have to get to work in my garden and get this job done, too.
