Finer Things Friday: woosh, woosh, woosh, woosh, woosh

Six years ago we miscarried a baby at 11 weeks.  Time heals, but a mama heart never forgets. We hadn’t had our first pre-natal appointment yet, and never did hear a heartbeat.

I knew I wouldn’t rest until Monday.  I never do.  Especially in the pregnancies since the miscarriage.  That’s why we told no one (almost) about this baby, even though my first trimester had pretty much passed.  The Finest sound I’ve heard in the last 2 months?  The woosh, woosh, woosh of our 13-week-old baby’s heartbeat!

In my weakness, it’s hard not to doubt.

  1. I have goose bumps Amy! I always love that first appointment when you are able to hear the heartbeat! Definitely a Finer Thing! Congrats again… so, so happy for you!

  2. Awesome! What great news! I’m just tickled for you! I hope you are feeling well 🙂
Thanks for hosting another great FTF!

  3. Oh, definitely a finer thing!!! Congrats again!!

  4. That is so great, I am so happy for you!

And, P.S. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I would secretly panic every time the doctor was about to listen for the heartbeat, afraid he would hear nothing. I breathed a sigh of relief every time. It really is one of the most beautiful sounds. : )

  5. Oh, I already said congrats but another one is in order! Congrats!

We lost our sweet baby before conceiving our next two little ones. I know just how you feel and rejoice along with you.

Keeping you and your little one in our prayers for the next several months 🙂

  6. I’m so happy for you! I had two miscarriages before my last child and it’s heartbreaking, so I know how precious that sound is! Congratulations!!!

  7. Awww, Amy. My heart is so happy for you. Having had a miscarriage myself, I know that feeling of doubt and worry. Blessings to you and your sweet baby! xoxo

  8. S o precious…I can’t be more thrilled for you all. 🙂

  9. It’s such a beautiful sound! Congratulations, Amy!

  10. I am so excited for you! (I feel like I’m going to be an auntie again!) I always loved hearing the heartbeat of my babies, it was so reassuring! What a great time in your life!!

  11. Congrats! I know exactly how you feel. I had a miscarriage with baby #1 pretty much exactly 6 years ago. We are missionaries in Mexico so my first prenatal appointment was here in Mexico. It was already scary enough but when he did not find a heartbeat it was extremely difficult. (We had only been in Mexico for 7 months.) God has blessed us with 2 boys (almost 5 and 20 months) and I am 14 weeks pregnant with #3. I think it’s also harder for me to enjoy the early part of pregnancy because of the miscarriage. Every little thing scares me. I have had 2 ultrasounds so far and it is so awesome to see a little life growing inside of me. ( It will be exciting to hear more about your pregnancy since we are so close!

  12. Congratulations, Amy! There is absolutely nothing in the world like hearing that blissful sound for the first time. 🙂

  13. Amy, I’m so excited for you! You’ll have to tell us lots of stories as your pregnancy progresses.

I remember being nervous before that first appointment…praise God for that sweet sound!

  14. …the sweetest sound ever…Congratulations!!

  15. Congratulations on your new blessing!

  16. That is one of the best sounds in the world. I’m glad everything is going well.

  17. I will never forget that sound as long as live. Truly a finer thing!

  18. My very first pregnancy, 8 years ago, was a miscarriage and I had those same doubts and worries up until I heard the heartbeat for the first time with each of our three children. It is definitely a finer thing to finally get to hear that precious heartbeat!

Congrats again! So happy for you!

  19. Such a miracle new life is. Congrats!

  20. Congratulations!!! That is wonderful news! I also had an early miscarriage between my 1st and 2nd born children and oh yes did it ever change the way I felt in those days leading up to the appt. when I got finally got to hear the heartbeat for my next 2 pregnancies!

  21. Made me a bit teary, thinking of you waiting for that whoosh. Such wonderful news!!!

  22. I am so happy for you. I was wondering how far along you were. I have been through 4 miscarriages, so I know exactly what you mean. The last one was very hard because I lost almost 4 pints of blood. It was very hard, but I was able to have my little guy after that. I am so thankful for each of my children, and having been through those losses makes me appreciate a good pregnancy even more. Take care and enjoy the next 6 months.

  23. Yay! So glad your mind is at peace. Enjoy your pregnancy!!

  24. I feel so privileged to get to see you on this beautiful journey with your family. Congratulations!!

  25. Yay! What a great finer thing, congratulations!

  26. that is quite an awesome sound, isn’t…congratulations on your newest blessing!

  27. That is such a life-affirming moment… and it never gets old! So incredibly delighted for you, Amy, and happy you’ve been able to share your wonderful news with all of us who love you!

  28. The best sound ever.

Congrats again! Are your kids just thrilled at the thought of another sibling?

  29. Congratulations!!! I wish for you a healthy pregnancy and delivery!!

  30. Amy that is absolutely a Finer Thing in Life!!! I agree Alyssa, that is a sound you will never forget. My first child was born in Germany, so I also had the opportunity to see her every visit as they did an ultrasound every time, that was 17 years ago and I still remember it.

  31. What a beautiful Finer Thing! Praise God! What a blessing! Praying for a safe and healthy pregnancy!

  32. I understand 100% how you are feeling. I have had 2 losses.

This is def a finer thing!

    praying for you!! 🙂

  33. How exciting! Hope you have a wonderful pregnancy!

  34. I knew exactly what that title meant before I read the post. Best sound in the world! So happy for you, Ames!

  35. Such a special moment! Thanks for sharing it with us, and congratulations!

  36. Crying tears of praise!!!

  37. Carrie M says:

Congratulations! You are one week ahead of me! We’ve only told immediate family, as we suffered a loss 1 1/2 yrs ago as well.
Thanks for your great blog! You obviously have more energy than I do right now! 🙂

  38. Congratulations!!! I also lost a baby 6 yrs ago, and around the same gestational age. I know the heart ache and fears that go with it. (It was our 2nd in less then 5 mths.) We are thankful for the 3 boys we now have. But I still hold my babies in my heart!!!

  39. Congratulations!!! Your so right that is the best sound in the world!

  40. I definitely know that feeling–the doubt and the joy. We waited until almost 15 weeks to tell most everybody with our youngest since we had an ultrasound scheduled. It was just easier to have a lot of answers for all the questions.

A HUGE congratulations to your family! God is so good.

  41. i understand…having a m/c i really appricate the blessing of healthy babies. I will be praying for you….i know it’s not the most frugal thing but i rented a doppler for those times of worry with both of mine. the $25/mo was worth my piece of mind when satan would tempt me. Just thought i would pass that along. 🙂

  42. Michelle Baesler says:

My husband and I have lost two babies in the last two years – one at 28wks and one at 20wks. We are now 17 wks pregnant. I know exactly how you are feeling. Each doctor appointment I hold my breath. My prayers and thoughts are with you!

    • Oh, Michelle. I’ll be praying fervently for you in the next several weeks! I just wrote your name down so I won’t forget. Even though I’ve “been there” with the miscarriage, I still can’t imagine losing a baby that far along.

  43. congratulations! our prayers are with you!

  44. Michelle H. says:

    Greatest sound in the world!

  45. So pleased for you. What an honor to be chosen again.

When our 2 1/2 year old heard the sound of our newest’s heartbeat she said the baby was playing drums inside mama’s belly 🙂 Our then 13 month old just repeated the sound over and over. Hearing the heartbeat is definitely a finer thing.

    Congrats again!

  46. Oh, Amy!! Congratulations!

  47. I just wanted to say thank you so much for that post! I recently experienced a miscarriage with my husband and my first pregnancy. It was so hard, and a lot of blame and pressure on myself and what I could have done and should have done. But the love that was developed for that little one (even though we never got to see the baby actually arrive) will always be there. Thank you so much for reminding us all about the finest things.

    • I’m so sorry to hear that, Amy. I think all too often miscarriages get swept under the rug. But not for a mama heart. That’s MY BABY! So much uncertainty and worry, too. I pray that you heal physically and emotionally and that you’ll be blessed again with another baby.

  48. Karen P. says:

Congratulations! So happy for you! We got to hear our little “swoosh, swoosh” twice now! So exciting!

  49. Congratulations! What a blessing for you and your family!

  50. Congratulations! Such an exciting time for you. Listening to the first heartbeat is definitely a finer thing!

  51. congratulations. praying for a happy, healthy pregnancy for you.

  52. I had to read this twice! Yay! Yay!

  53. Congratulations! I am 11 weeks pregnant with baby #3 and am a nervous wreck. I am hoping to hear the heartbeat at my appointment on Thursday and won’t feel at peace until then. I have to admit that I panicked a little when I read that you had lost a baby at 11 weeks. I am glad to hear that all is well and look forward to going through this experience with you and the other pregnant readers that are due around the same time! How exciting!!

    • I panic every time I hear a sad story about pregnancy or birth… must get the negative thoughts out! Oh, today is Thursday! Did you have your appointment?

  54. So excited for this answer to prayer, Amy! Congratulations! 🙂
