Since I didn’t think to take a picture, allow me to paint one. This afternoon my two year old came into the kitchen with a well-worn, little-bit-torn princess night gown.
“Please put this on me, Mommy.”
And I did.
“See, Mom? I so pretty!”
And she was.
Tangled, ratty mess of a mane, splayed by the static of winter’s dry air. Dark blue marker streaks up and down her legs and belly from an earlier art session. Dirt smudged near her eyes and mouth, sign of a beautiful spring-like day fully enjoyed.
She was a sight.
And yes, so pretty.
My prayer is that my girls never stop creating, never stop digging in the dirt or shooting hoops in the wind, never stop being who they are all in the name of looking good. I pray they are always certain of their beauty, inside and out. It is absolutely a finer thing.
What finer things are you celebrating this week? Link up and share! Because the list of links is growing (57 last week!), I’m going to do a better “management” job. If you don’t use a permalink and/or don’t link back here, your link will be deleted.

Oy! Mr. Linky gets me every time! No, there is no such thing as Cardboardutterflies. Sorry about the typo!
My daughter has just started using the word princess and I love it!
How sweet! I love it when my girls are like that…
So true Amy!!! I think that’s the best gift we can give our girls!
Awww! Precious. I can’t wait for those days with Rachael.
UGH! I wondered how my title was longer than 80, now I see!!! Sorry, no chocolate cake in that post!!!
Hold onto those memories…they grow up way too fast!
Thanks so much for hosting another great Finer Things Friday!

Oh how sweet. I really don’t want to think about my baby being as big as 2 (she is 17.5 months right now) but your post reminds me that there are things to look forward to as she grows.
I love it when little girls define what pretty is for them rather than trying to live up to what they think the world wants pretty to be. Everyone wants to feel pretty once in a while, and I absolutely hope your daughter keeps feeling that way for a long, long time.
What a wonderful story! Yes, hopefully as she grows up she will continue to feel pretty under all circumstances.
Thanks for hosting this meme, it’s great!
So Sweet!
So sweet! They definitely grow too quick! Soon she will be as old as my oldest. I look at her and think where has the time gone?
How sweet. That is definitely a finer thing!
She has a beautiful spirit!
what a sweet post. I uploaded my blog with an album I made of some special photos… I hope you enjoy….
I LOVED playing dress-up as a kid!
Ha ha! I’m the mom that’s the anit-dirt freak. I also has a 5 year old daughter that is insistent that she is ugly unless she has a dress on. I don’t know where it came from. I don’t wear dresses, THAT much. My 2 year old on the other hand thinks EVERYTHING is pretty; I like that.
That is so sweet, Amy.
I, too, hope my girl never bends to just to fit in with our culture’s skewed idea of what beauty is.
As a side, Katie has just started “asking” Ben and me to put different things on her…the other day she came up to me and wanted me to put her bib on (not at mealtime) and she walked around the house as happy as a clam with her bib on over her dress. This morning, she “asked” Ben to put one sock on her. So cute.
That’s so sweet. I love that my girls know they are beautiful even when they have food all over their face and look more like they have just lost a bad fight
And thank you for the linky. This is my first time to participate, but I’m hoping to do so again!
Great story, and definitely a “finer thing!”
Participating today for the first time from the RefrigeratorArtist.com blog. Nice to meet you!
