Finer Things Friday: Right Here, Right Now

After a brief but heartfelt announcement expressing our sympathy to a rival school who lost a cheerleader to illness last weekend, we paused for a moment of silence.  Two tiny towns, rival schools knit together by unimaginable grief and a pigskin.

The game went on, because that’s what we do.  We play football, knowing that in the end, the ball isn’t the game. Community, self-confidence, courage, being a part of something bigger than yourself, relying on your teammates; that’s what it’s about.

All the teachers at our Tiny School received an ominous email today.  “The State Board of Education has placed mandatory school consolidations on the agenda.”  It’s not looking good for us, but if I know our people there will be a fight.  A fight to save the atmosphere of tonight.  A fight to save our heart.

We just played our last football game of the season.  There was the usual cheering and laughter and jeering the coach (ahem), but there was also peace.  Peace in the safety, comfort in the simplicity.  We know not what the future holds, but right here, right now, we are community.

Being a member of this community is a Finer Thing. What Finer Things are you celebrating this week?  Link up and let us know!  Please link up to your post and not your homepage.  Also, leave a link back here so your readers can find us.

  1. This is so sad. Events like this are so shaking to kids, parents and teachers. And on top of all of this, consolidation? Wow!

This has to be hard on everyone. Will be praying that everything will work out okay!

  2. What an emotional night on so many fronts. Woah. And how wonderful to be a part of what sounds like an amazing community.

  3. So sad on both accounts but so great that you guys can be there for each other as a community!

  4. This is such a touching post. What a wonderful thing to be a part of a tight knit community.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear about this girl. My heart and prayers go out to their family. It is wonderful how you all came together as a community through this. What a blessing to hear!

  6. I will keep the family and your communities in my prayers. As a former teacher (you know this!) it’s heart-wrenching to see how money affects children and education. I have never been able to understand why Tom Cruise and NFL Players need mulit-million dollar salaries when there are schools in disrepair and teachers, even in affluent districts – with Masters degrees, are on the low end of the pay scale.

The one thing I know about life is that it always changes. Being grateful, or more accurately, prayers of gratitude for what’s right in front of me today is always how I start to center and ground myself when it feel a little overwhelming.

I could go on, but this is a comment not a blog post. 🙂

    • @Amy @ Simply Sugar & Gluten-Free, Yes. The pay thing… so frustrating. I find myself more frustrated with America in general than with the highly-paid athletes and celebrities, though. WE’RE the ones who need to quit supporting their profession with billions of dollars. They wouldn’t make the money if we didn’t encourage the profession. Sad.

  7. Tragedy tends to help us focus on the really important things in life, and help us remember to be grateful for the many *finer things* we have. I love this party…thanks for hosting.

  8. I am so sorry Amy. Here I am worried about my husband’s school teachers striking and you might not have a school. I hope it works out in the end for y’all.

  9. Praying for you and your community. And for the family of the young girl.

  10. So sorry to hear all of this…illness, loss of a young life & uncertainty of the future. Our prayers are with you & the community!

  11. Tragedies like this can bring out the best in people:-)

  12. It is so crazy that you mentioned this because I am from Indy where this cheerleader was attending an FFA convention so she was on our local news and when I saw the story I immediately prayed for her family. I’m sorry about the consolidation as well. But you are correct, enjoy the moments we have because we don’t know how long we will have them.

  13. I will certainly be praying for you, your community and the family of the one who passed away. I am thankful that through it all you all are able to come together and be a strong community. That is a finer thing.
