Finer Things Friday: Her First Movie

finer things friday Finer Things Friday: Her First Movie

A couple weeks ago our six-year-old completed her current incentive chart.  She made her bed 20 times, which is certainly more than her Mama can claim. {ahem} It was time to celebrate with something special!

We asked her to brainstorm a list of things she thought would be an appropriate reward.

“Anything?”

Just make a list and we’ll see.

Here’s her list:

  • Look at the stars with mom and dad.
  • Read an extra chapter of my book.
  • Play a game with mom and dad.
  • Stay up later than brother and sister.

I nearly cried. Not one thing on there.  Just special time and attention.  One-on-one time.  Just us.

Little did she know that mama has tricks up her sleeve.  Since The Princess and the Frog was opening at our little local(ish) theater, I arranged a surprise date night.  Just us.

She’s never been to a movie in a theater.

I was so excited!

Until we actually walked in the doors, she had no idea.  None.

Her reaction?  Jumping up and down in the restroom with a loud “Thank you, Mommy.  Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!” was my first reward.

Her beaming smile that could not be turned off was my second.

I’ve never been thanked for anything so much in my life.

It’s good to keep the special things special.  It’s good to surprise. A Finer Thing, indeed.

*** As for the movie, it was good but there were some scary voodoo/spirit/shadowy-monster scenes that sent many of the young movie-goers (including mine) to their parent’s lap or to the lobby.   Just so you know.

What finer things are you celebrating this week? Link up and let us know!  Forgive me if I don’t make it to all the links this week.  Christmas is coming.  I’m busy cleaning my stable and enjoying my family.  :)   Oh, and no Finer Things Friday link up next week.  Merry Christmas!

You little girl’s list is so sweet!!! Thanks for the warning about the movie, I was debating taking my daughter but she’s rather sensitive so I may need to hold-off for now.

Yes, thanks for the warning. We were going to take our 4 year old, who loves anything princess, to see this movie. It would also be her first movie. But she doesn’t like scary stuff either.

You are a sweet mama!

My second-born daughter is my dear, soft girl.

Her perfect day…”Mom, what if we could snuggle ALL morning and then play games ALL afternoon, just you and me?”

Be still my heart. ;)

How awesome! The look on her face at the movie theater says it all. It’s not the things that we give to them, but the time that we spend with them – so precious, since they will be grown up & gone before we know it.

That was so awesome. I loved reading that story.

FYI – there’s a site you can use to gauge if something might be too scary and send you to the lobby: http://www.halleethehomemaker.com/2009/11/plugged-in/

The look on her face is wonderful! And I love that she picked all quality rewards, without a material thing in there.

wow she looks so excited!! You are the second person to say too scary. I was itching to take our 2 3/4 year old, but I think now we’ll wait. His first movie will be Toy Story 3 instead.
