Did you know that this coming Sunday, September 13, is National Grandparents Day? Yay for all the Grammies and Papas and Grammas and Grandmas and Grandpas and Grannies and Nanas and… well…
I am super blessed to still have my maternal grandparents, still living at my favorite place on earth, only a 30 minute drive away. My grandma; the woman is a saint. Ten children, she raised… including seven boys. I’ve never heard a negative word uttered from her lips. I still like to call her every once in a while to get a recipe or chat about the kids.
My grandpa; he’s just plain ornery. I’m so grateful that my own children are able to know him and play with him.
My dad’s parents are gone now. His dad, much too soon… when my dad was just a toddler. My Grandma B? Another saint. She raised 5 children on a farm all by herself. Some of my favorite memories of her revolve around “Pink lemonade, made in the shade.” And I remember thinking she had the coolest refrigerator… one with the freezer on the bottom. Oh! And I loved to “clean” her bathroom. It gave me a great excuse to get into all the flowery-smelling stuff.
As for my own children, they have the coolest grandparents ever! Checking cows and getting dirty on the farm with Papa and Grammy is a favorite past time, as is hangin’ with their cousins at Papa B and Grandma J’s place. Just two weekends ago, my three and my brother’s oldest four enjoyed Cousins Camp. My parents hosted… let me spell it out…
- a 6 year old girl
- another 6 year old girl
- a 5 year old boy
- a 4 year old boy
- a 3 year old boy
- a 2 year old girl
- a 19 month old girl
… for 2 full, fun days (and two nights)! (What did I do, you ask? I slept.)
Yay for Grandparents!

Are they taking applications for next year? I have a 15, 13, 9, 7, 5, 3, and infant. I am sure they would all love a few nights on the farm, and I’d love some sleep!

You are lucky to still have all the grandparents in your life. My parents and MIL are all gone.

Would your parents take 4 big dogs for the weekend too?? My mom would love for Joe and I to send kids her way if we had any.
Had to pause this morning to remember 9.11 – those who passed on and everyone who lost someone in the event. I felt so grateful for just being able to get up and breathe today. That’s a finer thing!

My husband and I plan to be active grandparents. Our children have missed out on that because they are busy with their own lives.

So fortunate you are to still have grandparents. I miss mine terribly!
My parents are very active in my childrens lives, however they’ve yet to take them along with cousins. They would, though. We’ll miss them this Gparents day, they’re off on a cruise! But we will see my MIL.

Ironically, my youngest will be waking up at her grandparents house on Sunday:-) She just loves sleep overs at their house:-)

Thanks for the great post and reminder about our grandparents. Both sets of my grandparents are gone but not forgotten. I have the most wonderful memories of my grandparents and always will.

Thanks for the heads up about grandparents day! My grandmother is actually here visiting this week (from 2000 miles away) so my boys and I will have to do a special dinner for great-grandma and the 2 grandmas who live local.

What a blessing! I Wish my grandparents were still alive, but we spend as much time as possible with my kids’ grandparents.

we have four hours to my parents and three of my grandparents and four minutes to my husband’s parents who are caring for his grandma in their home.
I just love watching my little girl carried to Communion in her PAPA’s arms like a little princess nearly every Sunday. Thanks for the reminder.
