Finer Things Friday: Are You Too Busy?

finer things friday Finer Things Friday: Are You Too Busy?

“Mommy?  Are you too busy?”

With a quiet voice full of trepidation, my independent 6-year-old approached the computer at bedtime, interrupting an email check.  Daddy was busy reading books to the younger two.  Her book had already been read.

I didn’t know what she wanted, and I’m thankful that at that moment it didn’t matter. I’m thankful that I looked into her eyes and gave her my full attention.  I’m thankful that I smiled and answered “No.  I’m not too busy.”

“Can we go in my bed and snuggle while they read books?”

Sweet music to a mother’s ears!  We climbed in her bed and curled up, drinking in the moment.  No talking.  No giggling.  Just us.

Please God, don’t let me ever be too busy.

What Finer Things are you celebrating this week?  Link up and let us know!  Please link to your post and not your homepage (if you don’t know how to do that, I can help you!) and leave a link back here so your readers can find us.

Amy –
Thank you for this. I’ve been so busy now that I’m back at my teaching job that I’ve let to-dos come in the way of a peaceful home life. This was exactly the post I needed to see tonight. Thank you.

I have to remind myself of this often. My husband and I both get too busy and we forget to slow down and be together. (No kids yet…) We’ve made it a point to just be together. I love that about us – we don’t need to do anything. We can just be.

I am celebrating my homemade graham crackers. Joe has eaten them for two days in a row. That means that they’re really good.

So sweet! I was exasperated with my 20-month old’s millionth “mommy, mommy” this morning, but before my tone could betray me, he kissed my arm. That’s why he wanted my attention. I’m glad I didn’t ruin it!

I’ve tried to add your button to my sidebar twice now and it appears as a blank. I’ll try again in the morning, have you had this issue before or is it me? I am not having trouble with other buttons…
Thanks!! Janell

@Janell Beals, Very odd. I had my designer tweak the code, but she was able to get it on her site. Try again and let me know if it’s still not working for you.

I was afraid your title was going to make me feel REALLY guilty b/c I probably am often too busy…but I only feel a little guilty now, b/c that was such a nice story. May I make the same good choice you did and be “not too busy” when my kiddos want attention!

Oh, I have chills. Good for you! :) It’s so easy to be too busy, isn’t it?

Isn’t that great. My 12 DS has been “needing” me more lately too, I’m holding onto it for as long as I can. They grow up way too fast.
Thanks for hosting!

Too sweet! Great reminder that our children only need us for a time, and then…they’re all grown up.

Your post helped encourage me today to make better choices through the morning with regards to my “busy-ness”. I can see the joy on my preschoolers’ faces when I slow down and look them in the eyes. What a beautiful thing! Thank you for this.

Aww, I love cuddling with my kiddos and will often take the risk of running late just to stay in bed and cuddle them in the morning.

My Finer Thing? I gave my whole heart and soul to God last night. Christianity is all new to me, and after a few meetings with my pastor, I jumped in! :)

My youngest is going to be a year old on the 29th and my favorite thing is giving him his bottle and rocking him to sleep. Kissing his sweet head once he has nodded off and soaking in this time has been so wonderful since he is our last baby.

Savoring all the writing here, from being in the moment and snuggling a child, to finding faith in Christ, to having a child home again. So many finer things, so many blessings.

I have to constantly remind myself to shake off the burden of “what must be done” to run the race of “what could be done for and with them now”, which is in itself and in its goal a most fine thing!

Love this post, Amy! It’s so easy to be “too busy,” but so important to present in the moment, isn’t it? Good for you, and hope you enjoyed your snuggling!
