I don’t remember the last time we had a puddle anywhere.

It’s been raining for more than 12 hours. The kids already had today off of school because we had conferences earlier in the week. We all slept in and awoke to the quenching sound of raindrops.

It’s dark. It’s dreary. It’s perfect.

Your Marriage is Worth It {Finer Things Friday}

I’ve often said that two of the greatest gifts we give our children are their siblings and our own strong marriage. I believe it, I mean it, and I try to live it.

We’ve been married long enough now (13 years) to see the ugly divorce statistics catching up with some of our friends and acquaintances. Many of you are fighting for your marriage right now, and some of you are running along keeping up with the busyness of life, confident that your marriage is just fine. Well, fine is good, but where marriage is concerned, fabulous is where it’s at.

Been Farmin’ Long? {Finer Things Friday}

Every few weeks my husband heads down to the farm to help his parents with cattle, field work, or whatever other farming things need to be done. Often he’s able to take a helper or three. This is how they return.

I think they roll in the dirt just to “see what Mama says,” but whatever. A day spent running in the fresh air, making your own fun, helping dad and spending time with the grandparents? Definitely a Finer Thing. Now if only he could take the little guy…

Trio {Finer Things Friday}

Yesterday we enjoyed our daughter’s very first piano recital. In fact, we didn’t just enjoy it; we joined in the fun! It was hard-fought fun, though, as a goof, then another goof, sent our embarrassed girl into tears at the keyboard. Poor thing was so nervous, and this after she had played her two harder songs perfectly! We worked through it though, and plinked out Good King Wenceslas. Here’s our practice version:

Yes, I wanted to cry with her. Yes, I wanted to dig the hole so we could both crawl in. But I didn’t. We didn’t. And you know what? The audience at the nursing home was pretty forgiving. Playing the piano with our daughter is a Finer Thing. Persevering through the rough spots was even Finer.

Wrap it Up {Finer Things Friday}

No need to wax eloquent about this one. I think all you busy moms will appreciate the scenario. My aunt (who doubles as my godmother) came over and wrapped all of my Christmas presents for me today, just because she enjoys wrapping that. much!

She wrapped while I wrote out tags, managed my “who gets what” list (remember, we buy for 18 nieces and nephews), and hauled the little helper off of the table 432 times.

Having most of my gifts wrapped more than a week before Christmas? Definitely a Finer Thing! Having them wrapped by someone else? Even Finer! What Finer Things are you celebrating this week? Link up and let us know!

Home {Finer Things Friday}

My little dude is fighting a fever. (We can’t seem to catch a break around here!) He’s downright pitiful in between doses of medicine (and yes, the medicine is necessary… it’s a high fever). That’s neither here nor there in a Finer Things post. The important thing is that I’m home.

I’m home to snuggle him and read books all day long. I’m home to rest with him during the day, and be up all night because he’s congested and uncomfortable. I’m not rearranging schedules, worried about other responsibilities. My responsibility is here. At home. And that, my friends, is a Finer Thing! So fine, in fact, that I just wrote my husband a quick note thanking him again for believing in the benefits and sacrificing so that I can be here. (PS — He thanks me for being here, too.)

Oh, and every once in a while, when the medicine kicks in and the fever breaks, I get my ornery boy back. That’s a Finer Thing, too.

Jump {Finer Things Friday}

Sometimes I forget just how easy it is to entertain a toddler. Mama’s being silly? Golden.

Yes, that’s a balloon on our 10 foot ceiling. It’s like the Energizer Bunny of balloons left over from our daughter’s surgery 2 months ago. Yesterday, the baby wanted the “ba” on the ceiling. Because I’m lazy, I decided that jumping to grab the balloon (off of the 10 foot ceiling) would be much more efficient than grabbing a chair, or a broom, or whatever to retrieve it.

So I jumped, and I grabbed.

My little guy nearly fell over with hysterical laughter. And then we had a game. Apparently throwing the balloon up to the ceiling so mama will jump is much more entertaining than playing with the actual balloon. Throw. Jump. Retrieve. Hysterical laughter. Repeat. (I’m so sorry I don’t have photos of that process for you!)

Over, and over, and over. Except for the times it was Jump. Laugh. Jump. Laugh. because Mama couldn’t reach the balloon. That was fun, too.

A simple reminder that it’s the little things. Don’t be afraid to get silly with your babes. Live the moment and laugh. Hysterically.

I’ll admit it. I’ve done it a few times, the whole “get up at 3am and out into the cold” craziness for the best deals. I was young(er) and I was with some other silly girls, so it was fun! (And safe. Even the not-so-tiny shopping towns around here are pretty tame.)

But now? I’m old(er), and tired(er), and pretty comfy in my recliner, so I do believe that’s where I’ll stay tonight and tomorrow to catch the best deals. I might send my husband out at 4am for a new dishwasher, though. Hmmmm
