Blue-Ribbon Monster Cookies

My very first 4-H fair entry was a blue-ribbon winner:  Monster Cookies. Mmmmm.  On Facebook last week I asked if they were a regional thing, because some people haven’t ever heard of Monster Cookies!  How sad.  😉  I don’t know if it’s the size of the cookie (you can make ’em big) or the size of the recipe (monsterous!) that gives them a scary name, but the taste is delicious!

Blue-Ribbon Monster Cookies

  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 c. white sugar
  • 2 c. brown sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 1/2 c. peanut butter (We like chunky.)
  • 2 t. vanilla
  • 2 t. lite corn syrup
  • 4 t. baking soda
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 9 c. oatmeal – Yes, 9 cups!  (I use old-fashioned.)
  • 1 c. chocolate chips
  • 12 oz. bag M&Ms
  1. Cream butter and both sugars.  Beat in eggs.  Stir in peanut butter, vanilla, and corn syrup.
  2. Add soda and salt.  Stir well.
  3. Stir in oatmeal 1-2 cups at a time.  Batter will be thick!
  4. Stir in chocolate chips and M&Ms.
  5. Scoop onto ungreased cookie sheet.  (I use my muffin scoop for big cookies.)  Squish a little so cookies will flatten while baking.
  6. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes.

*** Be sure to use your biggest bowl, as this makes a huge batch!  8-10 dozen.  Before it’s untimely demise, I used my favorite yellow bowl.  Now I use my stock pot.

*** If you don’t need 8 dozen cookies at once, feel free to freeze the dough for later… or just freeze the baked cookies!

*** There is NO FLOUR in this recipe.

*** When making these for a special holiday or my kids’ sports teams, I like to “reserve” the special M&M colors and squish them on top before baking.

    We have them in Nebraska but our usual recipe is DOUBLE that. . . . a dozen eggs, 18 cups oatmeal, etc.

      @Kathryn, mine too! (I’m originally from PA, but the recipe came from someone who used to live in AZ.) The recipe I have actually lists the ingredients in POUNDS: 1 pound butter, 2 pounds brown sugar, 3 pounds peanut butter, 1 pound chocolate chips, 1 pound M&M’s, etc. Somehow when the list of ingredients is in pounds, it even sounds like more! 🙂

      We live in Texas! My son never cared for cake, so for his birthday parties I made these cookies(he loves M&Ms). I just put the cake decorations on them, spelling “Happy B-day Aaron!”, & arranged the cookies on a big serving tray! They were always a huge(no pun intended) hit!

  6. My recipe is smaller, only makes about 5 dozen. It’s got different mix-ins too. Monster cookies are darn good though! My almost 4-year old loves to help me make them. I measure everything out ahead of time, he climbs up on his chair with his apron on, I work the mixer while he dumps everything in. 🙂 Here’s mine:

  7. I am in NC, and we have monster cookies here. My add ins are a little different, but I believe whatever I have on hand works, because I’ve chopped up Reese’s cups for these too. My recipe came from Paula Dean 5 or 6 years ago and was featured on as one of the 12 days of Christmas cookies for that year.

    We love monster cookies in Pa! And that is only half of our recipe, ours has 1doz. eggs & 18 c. oatmeal too! They are great to have in the freezer!

    In Southern Piedmont NC, our recipe is a little different (no oatmeal or peanut butter). We made them smaller and called them “Trash” cookies.

    • If they don’t have oatmeal or peanut butter… you can’t call them monster cookies. 😉 I’d love to see your recipe for trash cookies. Those sound fun!

    Never heard of them (we’re from NV/UT but my mom is a NY-er and we would definitely have had them if she knew about them)… Definitely going to try them! My SD has celiacs and if we make them w/Gluten-free oats, this is an amazing GF cookie recipe – no tricky/grainy GF flour mixes to deal with!

    • I wondered about the GF oats. I’ve heard they are pricey, but so are the special flours, right? I hope it works for you!

  18. I’ve definitely heard of them here in Ohio. I thought that the “Monster” came from the M&M’s being in them.

    I also was introduced to them in 4-H- maybe they are a 4-H recipe.

    Thanks for sharing- I haven’t thought of these in a long time! I’m excited to make them for my son who will love them.

  29. Amy, I just made this recipe today- I had a hard time getting them off the pan in one piece. They taste delicious, but are not “pretty.” Any suggestions for keeping them from falling apart?


    • Hmmm, How long did you wait before you scraped them off the pan? I know sometimes my cookies will fall apart if I try to move them fresh out of the oven or if I wait too long and they’ve cooled. Maybe?
