Baking Day, Take 1

Phoebe got me excited last week when she mentioned doing a bulk baking day today.  You know how I feel about making a mess in my kitchen – I’m all for it!  Lots of Twitter friends rallied, and there was a whole lotta bakin’ goin’ on around the blogosphere today.  We even had our own #bakingday hashtag to keep track of each others progress.  It’s more fun to bake with friends!

My day wasn’t quite as productive as I’d like (isn’t that always how it goes?) but I’m gearing up to finish some things tomorrow.  Here’s what I did accomplish.

1.  A double batch of Lazy Granola.  Handy to have for quick breakfasts, and I plan to turn some of it into granola bars tomorrow.

2.  Mexican Two-Bean Chicken Chili.  (A new-to-me recipe from Once-A-Month Cooking Family Favorites.  You can win a copy of the book here!

3.  Homemade Playdough. Not exactly on my list, but I’m so glad I took the time to do this for my little people before getting too busy with other things.  They were entertained for more than 2 hours with playdough!

4.  Mom’s Cinnamon Rolls. I like the Big Batch Cinnamon Rolls for feeding a crowd, but these… these are the best. Want the recipe?  Come back in a few days.  ;-)

5.  Phoebe’s 100% Whole Wheat Bread. I’ve never used this recipe, mainly because up until now I’ve never had vital wheat gluten in my fridge.  Haven’t cut into a loaf yet, but it sure looks (and smells) good!

And that’s it for the day.  Tomorrow I’ll tackle some quick breads and muffins… I hope!  Anyone want to join me?

  1. Seems like you were pretty productive to me! If I could get bread to turn out that beautiful I would consider that a success! :) And I’m very anxious about getting the recipe for those cinnamon rolls…yum!!

  2. I think you’re the Queen of Cinnamon Rolls. Those look fantastic! Mine are never photo-worthy.

  3. I’d love your granola recipe and how do you make the bars?
    Thanks
    Andrea

  4. Yeah…your day was far more productive than mine! :)
Let us know how the wheat bread turned out – mine is always SO dense!

  5. I think you were pretty productive! I’ll be joining in again tomorrow–but my plans have changed a bit. I just became the proud owner of 2 more bushels of apples! :)

I agree with FishMama–you are the Cinnamon Roll Queen!

  6. fun and productive! I bet your kids had fun with that playdough too :)

  7. Those cinnamon rolls look divine! I wish mine looked that good when I made homemade ones. :)

I did some baking today too! :)

You can read here what I did today.

  8. Those cinnamon rolls look amazing! I guess I missed out, I didn’t know we were doing a specific day, I’m bummed.
Need to bake tomorrow though for the football team and for the family.

  9. I would love to join you but I am just swamped. I would like to get a baking day in soon in prep for the next couple months. Baking ahead and freezing makes the holidays run smoother. My time will come soon:-)

  10. What a beautiful and productive day. Your house must smell wonderful. If you get a chance and would like to share your recipe for granola bars I would love to try it. I love the recipe for lazy granola and each time we eat a store bought granola bar I keep wishing to find a recipe to use with the lazy granola. What a coincidence.

  11. Yes! How do you turn the granola into bars? Let us know!

  12. Where did you find your vital wheat gluten? I’ve also had that bread recipe bookmarked to try but can’t seem to find the wheat gluten.

  13. I made the “lazy granola” this week…AMAZING. How come nobody ever told me how easy it was to make granola. My kids love it, but the prices at the health food stores have skyrocketed, so I don’t buy it anymore. Thanks to you my kids are granola happy once again. I am linking to this post on my blog.

  14. Love the homemade playdoh idea! I’m doing that next time!!!

  15. I made the lazy granola and absolutely loved it – it was a perfect use for my last bits of honey and brown sugar – Thank you!

  16. Question: With the Lazy Granola…do you add raisins while mixing before the oven, or after baking in oven??
Oh, BTW…I’ve made your large batch cinnamon rolls for the HS staff…they were a HIT!! Can’t wait to try these!!

  17. It all looks wonderful! I think I may have to try that granola. Do you use it for granola cereal?

  18. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for the granola recipe. We are a family of six with MANY food allergies and some have Celiacs Disease. Thank You Again and God Bless!

  19. You did good. I only made a double batch of banana bread. I had company coming. Thanks for inspiring me to do that.

  20. Mmmmm, can’t wait for the cinnamon roll recipe, they look great!

  21. So about that cinnamon roll recipe… they look so good… my children will eat those up!!! Great job on the baking… love the playdough too!
