Break out of your routine this week to have some April Fool’s Day family fun. Laughter within a loving family is definitely one of the Finer Things in Life! Here are ten easy ideas to get you started.
- Reverse your meals: supper for breakfast, breakfast for supper.
- FishMama’s fixing apple pie for breakfast. With ice cream! I think we’ll have snow ice cream one last time for our April Fool’s breakfast.
- After breakfast, go straight into the bedtime routine. Delight in your children’s confusion.
- Enjoy a pajama day together.
- In the evening, spoon whipped topping or icing on the kids’ toothbrushes and call them in to brush their teeth.
- Serve cupcakes for dinner and hamburgers for dessert.
- Start your day calling the kids “mom” and “dad.” Let them be in charge for a while.
- Watch old cartoons or a funny movie together. Have a good laugh.
- Wear your clothes backwards, put socks on your hands, etc. and see how long it takes for the kids to notice. Let them play along.
- Create nametags to wear throughout the day. Each family member can be called whatever they want all day long. I do believe I will be “Queen of the Castle.”

Those are such great ideas!!
how fun! I’m excited for the meals in reverse — but I like the bedtime routine too! We’ll definitely implement these when we have kids!
We’re hopping in the car first thing in the morning, and leaving for Disneyland so I can’t go to any extremes on April Fool’s Day. (We’re really heading to D-Land, that’s not a joke.)
But!
I am going to prepare a bowl of milk and cheerios tonight and then FREEZE it!! Tomorrow I will quickly play the joke on my 5 year old, and then let him play the joke on his daddy. ; )
And yes, I read about this trick last year, and I’ve been waiting for a YEAR to do it!!
I’ve already worked out a trick for my husband with my neighbor. I gave him the spare set of keys for my husband’s truck and tonight when he gets home from work(he works 2nd shift) he’s going to put my husband’s truck in HIS driveway and pull his truck into OUR driveway. I can just see the confusion on my husband’s face now!
And as far as the kids go..I’m liking the idea of starting the bedtime routine after breakfast..but I’m worried they’ll YELL at me!
These are funny. Imagine the chaos!
Fun! I’ve always wanted to do those funny foods. I love the nametag idea, too. I’ll take Queen of Naptime today! Zzzzz….
Love it! I’ve got to see how many I can pull off before tomorrow AM!
What a great list! I think we’ll be using a few of these…
Oh – these all sound so fun! Thanks!
That sounds like so much fun! I wish we could stay home for the day and try them. But alas we have to go to work and school. Hope you have a great time.
This is a great post, I happen like to have the reverse order meals.. April fool’s day is one of my favorite, I always try to come up with something new each year. Here are some of my favorite hoaxes that I draw inspiration from, you can vote on your favorite: http://www.toptentopten.com/topten/april+fools_+hoaxes+ever
I was hoping to look online for some fun ideas for tomorrow, so I’m so excited to read these! Definitely going to incorporate at least a few of them to make the day lots of fun!
What a fun list! Thanks for sharing!
Oh how fun! I love the brushing teeth with whipped topping & having cupcakes for dinner & hamburgers for dessert!
Thanks for the ideas!
We are definitely doing the icing on the toothbrush thing!
Awesome! #3 is my fav….too bad it won’t work.
Great list by the way, who knows….maybe I’ll swipe some and delight in a fun day with the fam! Thanks for the ideas!!!
Okay…it’s now 9am on the morning of April Fools… I had sewn my husbands boxer briefs together (the waistband to the bottom leg of another pair, about 8 pairs altogether… kind of making a laundry line) and sewn his socks together. Well… after my husband had a night of what seemed to be either food poisoning (I certainly hope not, since I made him the food… through the bathroom door I heard, “Are you poisoning me?” in a serious tone!!) or a touch of a stomach bug, I quickly had to snip all of my tricks back the right way. Since he was feeling better he decided to go into school… and he certainly wasn’t in the mood for having to snip his underwear and socks to “freedom” at 5:30am! Oh well… so much for an April fools joke this year. I’ll try again in 2010!! (The kids are still having cake for bfast though!!)
Those are great ones!!

Oh goodness, those are very silly games to play with children! Your list brightened my already bright mood.
