Angel Food Cookies

by Amy on April 15, 2009

Tender, light, and delicate describes these yummy cookies that are a blast from my past.  Mom made them best, but mom also used Crisco. ;-) Make them little for a sweet and dainty addition to a spring tea party or shower.

Angel Food Cookies

  • 1 c. butter, softened
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla (or 1/2 tsp. vanilla and 1/2 tsp. coconut flavor)
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 c. coconut
  • sugar and water for dipping

Cream butter and sugars.  Add egg and vanilla.  Mix well.  Mix in dry ingredients, including coconut.  Roll dough into small balls.  Dip each ball first in water, then in sugar.  (a fun way for the littles to help!)  Bake at 375° for 7-9 minutes.  Watch closely.  These cookies are best when they just get set.  You don’t want them to turn brown.

Oh I can just imagine how those would taste! I’ve never heard of a recipe for angel food cookies! I love that it uses common ingredients! And I’ve never heard of dipping them in water, then sugar first! I’ll have to give these a try!

Mmmm. Looks good. I have heard about using butter flavored crisco in place of butter I still haven’t gotten around to trying it out for myself yet. Is that what your mom did?

I will have to try these. I have one with milk allergies, and I can never find good cookie recipes for him. But I could do these with the Crisco. I think he will like them.
