Several years ago, when I was in the thick of putting together my firstborn’s baby album, we visited my parents for the day… or weekend… I don’t remember. What I do remember is digging in the high, recessed corners my parent’s closet where our incomplete {ahem} baby albums are kept. Allow me to speak for my younger sister: “At least you have a baby album.”
I was just curious; hadn’t looked at it in awhile and wondered how I compared to my own baby girl, born 28 years later. So I’m flipping through and I get to the “baby gifts” section. Wanna guess who’s gift was written first? An item from my in-laws! So, I guess you could say that Lance and I go way, way back.
Love stories abound over at Heavenly Homemakers today. Our story has so much history, so many twists and turns, that I couldn’t possibly make you read my ramblings get it all in one post. Allow me to give you a little history lesson instead.
- our dads played slow-pitch softball together; they also took some masters classes together
- my grandpa (mom’s dad) played ball with Lance’s great uncles
- my mom grew up 15 miles from Lance’s dad (tiny communities, everyone knew each other)
- his parents live 3 miles from my grandparents (and two uncles)
- his dad and my grandpa are buddies, they fight play like the Hatfields and McCoys
- I don’t know who the Hatfields and McCoys are, but that’s what I always hear people say
- my dad taught in the Tiny Town where my mom grew up and where Lance’s family lives
- my dad stalked my mom through her 7 brothers, some of whom he was teaching and coaching at the time (Oh, wait! That’s a different story! Sorry ’bout that!)
- this all happened in a town even smaller than where I live — we’re talking pop. 300 max
So, there you have it. We were doomed destined for life long love before we were even born!
Prepare yourselves, folks. This is only the beginning. I’ve so much more to tell you about our meeting and God’s incredible plan for our marriage. It may take me a while.
In the meantime, gear up for a weeklong Valentine’s blogfest here at Finer Things. I’m working with some very talented ladies this week to bring you A Valentine’s Exchange of Ideas and Inspiration, sponsored by Parenting the Tiniest of Miracles.

Stories like this fascinate me! I moved around so much as a child, I have no ties that go way back. I think that’s so neat how intertwined your family histories are! What a wonderful legacy for your children too.
That is so awesome that you guys go way back. My best fried always knew my husband and constantly tried to get us to “go out” but I always talked my way out of it. After over 5 years of listening to it, I caved. Wish I would have listened to her sooner!!
Thanks for sharing your story.
I look forward to what you wonderful ladies have planned next week!
Ha! How tiny-townish! That’s great!! I was dating a guy in college and he showed me his baby book and had his birth announcement from the paper (another tiny-town thing…they still do it every Sunday!) but when I looked at it…I was listed two days before him in the same paper listing!! Never knew it…but no, we weren’t destined for eachother!! And, btw, as the youngest…I don’t even have a baby book, and no prof. baby pics either. My mother claims the phototog. went out of business! (so there were no others, I guess?!) Great story though! Your holidays must be so fun and full of history and memories!! Happy Valentine’s Day!
How neat about your back story!
God had a plan.
Looking forward to seeing what this week has in store!
Wow! You guys were completely meant to be with all those connections:-)
What a fun story with neat connections!
